Rockets vs. Royals Wednesday November 5, 2014 Game Time - 7:05 pm Tonight’s Preview: Welcome to Prospera Place. The Rockets open a three game home stand tonight against the Victoria Royals. This is the first of eight meetings between the two BC Division rivals. They th th th meet again on November 18 and 19 in Victoria before continuing the seasonal series February 13 at th st Prospera Place. The Rockets again take the ferry to the Island for two games on February 20 and 21 . Last season the Rockets were 3-4-0-1 in the eight game seasonal series with the Royals winning all four games at Prospera Place, with one victory coming in a shootout. The Royals handed the Rockets three of their four regular season losses on home ice last season. The Rockets are coming off a 5-3 win in Vancouver Sunday afternoon. Rourke Chartier scored twice while Michael Herringer earned his first win in a Rockets uniform with a 16 save performance. Following tonight’s game, the Rockets host Spokane on th Friday November 7 before welcoming the Vancouver Giants on Saturday. Rodney’s a Rocket: The Kelowna Rockets acquired 18 year-old Rodney Southam from the Tri City th Americans Tuesday for a 5 round bantam pick. Southam is a former teammate of Rourke Chartier’s with the Saskatoon Contacts. The two won a Saskatchewan Major Midget title together back in 2011-2012. Southam played 63 games with the Americans after signing with Tri City in the summer of 2012. The Saskatoon resident was a bantam pick of the Red Deer Rebels in 2011. Alumni Update: Former Kelowna Rockets forward Myles Bell is playing in the East Coast Hockey League with the Evansville IceMen. Bell scored twice and added an assist and recorded an amazing 11 shots on st net in his second game with his new team (October 31 ) and was named the games second star. Bell has played three games in the ECHL after leading the Rockets in scoring the last two seasons…Ryan Olsen, who is enjoying his first pro season in the American Hockey League with the St. Johns Ice Dogs has one goal in 12 professional games…Jordon Cooke, last season’s Rockets MVP, is 2 and 3 with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Cooke has a goals against average of 2.63 and a save percentage of .919 along with one shutout. Bowey/Baillie represents WHL: Captain Madison Bowey and 19 year-old forward Tyson Baillie will represent the Western Hockey League in the Subway Super Series in November. The 18 year-old has 12 of his 14 goals on opposition ice….Chartier has been held off the score-sheet three times this season, all on home ice…Justin Kirkland hasn’t scored a th goal in seven games. Herringer was listed by the Rockets a few weeks ago after being released by the Saskatoon Blades. The Rockets are an incredible 124-28-4-5 in their last 161 regular season games dating back to the start of the 2012-2013 season….The Rockets have scored seven shorthanded goals this season. Last season the team managed 13 shorthanded goals and had the best penalty killing unit in the WHL… The Rockets have scored a power play goal in 13 of 17 games this season…The opposition has opened the scoring in eight of the 17 games….The Rockets have out-shot the opposition in 13 of the 17 games this season…Nick Merkley has been held pointless only three times this season....Whistle’s 29 save shutout win Thursday was the first for a Rockets goalie on the road since February 25, 2011 when Adam Brown made 27 saves in a 1-0 victory in Red Deer.…In case you are wondering, the Rockets have not been shutout in 93 consecutive games. Trade winds blow: The Rockets reduced their roster October 10 by sending 20 year-old Carter Rigby to the Swift Current Broncos for a third round bantam pick. Rigby was originally acquired from the Prince George Cougars in September, 2011 for a third round bantam selection. Wednesday, November 5th @ Kelowna Rockets SUBWAY SUPER SERIES: Royals’ defenceman Joe Hicketts and Rockets’ defender Madison Bowey were named Assistant Captains for Team WHL in the upcoming SUBWAY Super Series against Team Russia. Hicketts will wear the “A” in Game 2 in Brandon, MB, on November 11th, while Bowey will have the letter on his jersey on November 10th in the opening game in Saskatoon, SK. HOMETOWN HEROS: The Victoria Royals are coming off a successful homestand in which they went 3-1-1-0, picking up seven points and averaging three goals per game. In nine games this season at the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre, the Royals have posted a record of 5-2-2-0. Victoria’s five home wins ranks second in the Western Conference behind the Kelowna Rockets who are undefeated at home with a 6-0-0-0 mark. VALLEY LIFE: During the 2013-14 season the Victoria Royals posted a 5-2-0-1 overall record against the Kelowna Rockets including a mark of 4-0-0-0 at Prospera Place. Since moving to Vancouver Island the Royals are 11-10-0-3 against the Rockets with a record of 7-4-0-1 in Kelowna. IN THE CREASE: Coleman Vollrath has started the last seven games for the Victoria Royals, the longest active starting streak for a goalie in the WHL. In this span Vollrath has gone 5-1-1-0, while posting a .928 save percentage. Vollrath's lone regulation loss came against the Brandon Wheat Kings, the top ranked team in the Eastern Conference. SONS OF EDMONTON: Royals’ forward Brandon Magee and Rockets’ forward Tyrell Goulbourne are both Edmonton locals and have played against each other in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (2007-09) and the Alberta Midget Hockey League (2009-10). In three seasons between the two leagues, Magee played a total of 96 games notching 167 points (77g – 90a), while Goulbourne played 91 games and marked 44 points (21g – 23a). POWERPLAY PRECISION: In tonight’s contest both the Royals and Rockets are ranked in the top five in the WHL in powerplay percentage. Victoria is fifth in the league at 24.1%, while Kelowna is first with a powerplay percentage of 31.0%. Victoria has scored on the powerplay in seven consecutive outings, and in 10 in their last 12 games going 15-52=28.8%. Austin Carroll and Travis Brown lead all Royals’ skaters with six powerplay goals apiece and are also in a four-way tie for the league lead. GONE STREAKING: The Royals have five players who have taken the opportunity to add to their stats lately. Axel Blomqvist is leading the charge scoring 13 points (6g - 7a) in his last six games. Brandon Magee has 11 points (3g - 8a) in all six games he’s played in this season, while Austin Carroll is in the midst of a six game point streak where he has nine points (3g-6a). Joe Hicketts and Travis Brown are on three game point streaks with five points (1g-4a) and four points (2g-2a) respectively.
