Kindergarten Literacy First Sight Words and Number/Color Words: Our school has adopted the Literacy First model as a means to teach and assess literacy skills for all elementary students. Literacy First is a research-based and state adopted curriculum that focuses on specific phonological, phonics, fluency and comprehension skills. It shares many of the same sight words as Fry’s sight word lists and Dolch’s sight word lists. Please study these sight words that are on the weekly newsletter each night. Sight words should be recognized instantly by readers. The kids will be tested on these every Friday to see what gains they have made. It is very important that your child learns these words in order to be successful when they transition into the 1st grade.
Info to Know Dr. Edward B. Fry ranked the most common words used in English in order of frequency. In 1996, Dr. Fry expanded on Dolch's sight word lists and research, and published a book titled "Fry 1000 Instant Words." In his research, Dr. Fry found the following results: *25 words make up approximately 1/3 of all items published. *100 words comprise approximately 1/2 of all of the words found in publications. *300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material. Over half of every newspaper article, textbook, children's story, and novel is composed of these 300 words. It is difficult to write a sentence without using several of the first 300 words in the Fry 1000 Instant Words List.
