Innovations & Promotion Brothers Alfons and Karl Knauf founded the ‘Rheinische Gipsindustrie und Bergwerksunternehmen’ company in 1932. At the same time they were granted permission to use a gypsum mine in Schengen and opened the first plant for the production of dry building mixtures based on gypsum in Perl on the Mosel River. It was these enterprises that became the first production sites of what has become the world-famous Knauf Group. Beginning in 1970, Dr. Alfons Knauf and Dr. Franz Wirsching maintained regular

scientific exchange with some scientists and institutes from the Soviet Union. In the late 70s in extension of these relationships, a representative office of the ‘Knauf Engineering Company’ was opened. And with the economic transformations and change in the political system, Knauf became interested in the opportunity to participate in the plaster industry in Russia and the CIS countries. For that purpose, ‘Knauf Engineering’ did research on the plaster industry of the former Soviet Union countries. Company representatives began negotiations and visited some enterprises. The conclusions were unfavorable – most of the plants were in bad condition: technical maintenance was long overdue and no spare parts were available. But most important, the output of these plants was not in demand because its assortment and quality absolutely did not correspond to the demands of the time. Despite this fact and significant risk, Knauf decided to start manufacturing in Russia, and later on in other CIS countries. The main

Knauf Even today the International Knauf Group remains a family company, whose owners are all members of one family. Knauf’s devotion to traditional values helps to make the company the leader in the field of innovative developments. When in 1970 the Knauf Company acquired shares in ‘Deutsche Perlite GmbH’ (Dortmund), for the first time it invested in a product which is not made out of gypsum.

In 2007, production of fiberglass heat insulation also started at the Stupino plant near Moscow. Today Knauf is the largest German investor in the construction industry in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Moldova, providing top quality products made from local raw materials and using local specialists. Besides its 14 Russian enterprises, the ‘Knauf CIS Group’ is comprised of three enterprises in Ukraine, three in Kazakhstan and one each in Moldova and Uzbekistan. Marketing companies have been established in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Uzbekistan, and representative offices have been opened in Georgia and Azerbaijan. The innovative development of the Knauf company is ensured by investigations into the newest technologies, many researches, internal exchange of information and permanent joint project work.

The Knauf company has received many professional awards. An awards ceremony took place on the 6th of August 2007 at ‘Rosstroy’ that summed up the results of a contest to identify the best organization amongst construction, project, research companies, as well as building materials and construction industry enterprises that are active participants in the realization of the priority national project ‘Affordable and Comfortable Housing to Citizens of Russia’. The Russian enterprises of the Knauf company have traditionally taken part in this prestigious industry contest and traditionally received awards. In 2007 the following were recognized as being among the best: ‘Knauf gips’, Krasnogorsk, 1st place amongst building material enterprises and the special pennant ‘Elite of the Russian Construction Industry’ ‘Knauf gips Novomoskovsk’ – diploma and special pennant ‘Elite of the Russian Construction Industry’ ‘Knauf gips Baskunchak’ – diploma ‘For Achievement of High Efficiency and Competitiveness in the Construction and Building Materials Industry’ ‘Knauf gips Kolpino’ – special diploma ‘For Mastery of Effective New Approaches in Production Organization and Construction Management’ ‘Knauf gips Dzerzhinsk’ – diploma ‘For Achieved Success in the Realization of the Priority National Project Affordable and Comfortable Housing to Citizens of Russia’. All the enterprises mentioned above were included in the rating ‘The Best 100 Enterprises of the Building Materials and Construction Industry’.

determining factor was the huge potential of the Russian market. During the first stage Knauf was interested in partial ownership of already existing enterprises of building materials manufacturers. A stake was acquired at investment auctions. Despite the serious tendering process, Knauf’s proposals invariably were the best ones. To win the investment auction it was

important not so much to acquire the shares at a good price as to have a solid investment program for the development of the enterprise. In its programs the Knauf company suggested fundamental modernization of existing production sites – only upon this condition would they be able to produce the highest-quality product demanded by the market. Moreover, significant attention was paid to the particular properties of every specific plant, the social protection of the employees and ecological issues. For a long time the main products that were produced by the Knauf company around the world remained dry gypsum mixtures and systems for drywall construction. Years later, one more line of business of the Knauf company arose from rapidly expanding production of insulation materials. The beginning of this process was laid in 1978, when the company acquired a fiberglass insulation materials manufacturing plant in Shelbyville (USA).
