naturalistic evolution:

“everlasting, having no beginning and no end.” Since humans measure everything in time, it is very hard for us to conceive of something that had no beginning, but has always been, and will continue forever. However, the Bible does not try to prove God’s existence or His eternality, but simply begins with the statement “In the beginning God…” indicating that at the beginning of recorded time, God was already in existence. From duration stretching backward without limit to duration stretching forward without limit, God was and is forever.

A set of beliefs that the universe originated about 14 billion years ago; the earth coalesced about 4.5 billion years ago; life subsequently began, probably as bacteria deep in rocks, and has been evolving ever since. The process of evolution has been driven by purely natural forces, without input from a god or a goddess or multiple deities, and without a goal.

theistic evolution:

This resembles naturalistic evolution, except that God used evolution as a tool to guide the development of the different species from the simplest to most complex.

Latin for “from nothing.” The term “creation ex nihilo” refers to God creating everything from nothing. Prior to that moment there was nothing. God didn’t make the universe from preexisting building blocks. He started from scratch.

Beginnings

There are over 500 different creation stories among the world’s religions that account for the earth’s presence and its diversity of life forms. All of the stories are different.

Day 2

Based on the belief that God created the universe. Most conservative Christians believe that this happened less than 10,000 years ago and that God created all of the species of life along with the world itself in six 24-hour days.

Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1:2-3

God created everything.

The Big Picture In a recent talk at a Passion Conference, Louis Giglio used a golf ball to represent the size of the earth. He then compared the golf ball earth to the size of some other stars. He explained that our sun, an average sized star, is a million times the size of the earth. In his illustration, if the earth were the size of a golf ball, the sun would be fifteen feet in diameter— enough golf balls to fit inside a school bus! If the earth were the size of a golf ball, Betelgeuse—a red supergiant star in the Orion constellation— would be the height of six Empire State buildings stacked on top of each other. And, if the earth were the size of a golf ball, the largest star, Canis Majoris, would be the height of Mount Everest! Compared to the largest star, Earth is just a tiny golf ball sitting at the foot of Mount Everest. Wow! And God created that with just one word.

Read Psalm 33:6. What did God do to create the heavens? What about the stars, planets, and so on?

How does this change how you think of God?

God created the entire universe and all the stars in it with a simple breath. God is enormous and beyond anything we can even imagine—and that same God is the One who loves each and every one of us. And that includes you. ©ISTOCKPHOTO

My Prayer

God, You are awesome and beyond my understanding. I am humbled that You even know my name. You are truly Lord over everything.

I Am a Miracle Did you know that your eye is a very complex machine? There is no machine produced by human hands that can compare to what your eye can do. Consider this: Your eye is smaller than any manmade camera that can auto-focus as well as auto-adjust for light. Your eye can accommodate a 10-billion-fold change in brightness.

Read Psalm 139:13-15. What role did God have in all of these amazing things your body can do?

Knowing that God created you as a unique and intricately designed person, how do you think God wants you to view yourself?

The signature of the complexity of your body is marked by your Creator. The psalmist knew very well that his body was a miracle created by God. Celebrate and declare the miracle of your complex human body!

In what ways can you better honor your Creator?

Your eye can distinguish millions of shades of colors—with a camera that requires changes in multiple filters, films, settings, and housings. Your eye provides depth perception that can be processed to calculate the effort required to shoot a basketball on the run from 20 feet away. The eye’s retina has 127 million photovoltaic receptors, converting light to electricity and transmitting that to the brain to be processed. The list goes on and on. If that is how complex your eye is, can you even imagine how complex your brain is?

My Prayer

My God, my Creator, thank You for making me the unique person that You specifically designed me to be. Help me live in a way that honors You.

Who Do You Think You Are? Imagine not being able to look at a reflection or picture of yourself for an entire week. You would wake up every morning and try to wash your face, brush your teeth, and comb your hair with no idea of what you looked like.

How do you see yourself? How would you describe yourself to someone who doesn’t know you?

If that same person could know what you think and how you act and hear what you say 24 hours a day, what would they think of you?

God does know what you think and how you act, and He hears everything you say.

What was the only thing in the story of creation that was given life by the breath of God? Read Genesis 2:7. What does that mean to you?

Read Genesis 1:26. Why are you a reflection of God?

How are you described in 1 Peter 2:9-10?

The next time you look in mirror and see a reflection of yourself, consider that you are a reflection of God. Reflect Him well to others today.

My Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your great compassion and love. Help me to be a good reflection of You to the world. ©ISTOCKPHOTO
