Banned Books Week: September 21-27 Each year, book communities reserve a week in September to celebrate the freedom to read and the importance of expressing ideas from all walks of life, known as Banned Books Week. KHS Librarian Angela Whisenhant held a presentation to make students aware of the importance of Banned Books Week. An interpretation of the ALA’s Library Bill of Rights (their basic policy concerning access to information) states that, “Librarians and governing bodies should maintain that parents—and only parents—have the right and the responsibility to restrict the access of their children—and only their children—to library resources.” The ALA records the numerous reports of attempts to ban and/or challenge books in libraries. These attempts are a violation of First Amendment rights. According to the American Library Association’s (ALA) website, the reserved time “draws Individual national attention to the harms of censorship.” Classics such as To Kill a Highlights: Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, and The Great Gatsby have been on the list for decades, while contemporary pieces such as Twilight, The Hunger Games, and The Inside Story 2 Perks of Being a Wallflower are being added to the list. Teen Reads Week: October 12-18 Teen Reads Week is fast approaching and KHS Librarian Angela Whisenhant plans to inspire students this year by conducting book talks in the library. These book talks discuss books of every genre to each grade class. Teen Reads Week began in 1998 and is annually held on the third week of October. Its purpose is to encourage teens and young adults to be regular readers and library users. It is to promote the importance of reading for pleasure in all forms.

Members of the Art Department are curious to know what masterpieces are being created around the country, so Art Teacher Meagan Allen has started a Travelling Sketchbook project. Blank sketchbooks have been mailed out to schools across the country in the hopes that they will contribute three pieces of artwork and pass their sketchbook to another school. By May 1, the participating schools must mail the sketchbooks back to the KHS Art Department. The submitted works will be displayed throughout KHS hallways and the department’s website.
