Kroc Center Pickleball Rules A. Overview: Pickleball involves strategies that include lobbing, overhead slamming, passing drive shots from the baseline, and fast volley exchanges over the net in order to get points. Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court: 20’ x 44’. The ball is served diagonally starting with the right-hand service-square and points can only be scored by the team that is serving. Players on each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed, and there is a seven-foot non-volley zone on each side of the net, to prevent “spiking.” The server continues to serve, alternating service courts, until he or she faults. The first side scoring eleven points and leading by at least two points wins. Pickle-Ball can be played with singles or doubles. Non-Volley Zone

B. The Serve: Serves are to be in a diagonally position, starting with the right-hand servicesquare. The serve must clear the seven-foot non-volley-zone in front of the net and land in the diagonal service court on the opposite side of the net. A ball landing on any line is considered good. Serves are made underhand with the paddle below the waist, and the server must keep one foot in front and one foot behind the back line while serving. Only one serve attempt is allowed, EXCEPT if the ball touches the net and lands within the appropriate service court, then the serve may be taken over. The ball should be hit into the air without being bounced to start a serve. At the start of each new game, the first serving team is allowed only one fault before the ball is turned over to the opposing team. Thereafter, both members of each team will serve and fault before the ball is turned over to the opposing team. When playing doubles, the serving team must start their serve in the right hand court while their teammate stands in the in left hand court behind the back line. The team receiving the serve must stand diagonally from each other one in the upper right hand court behind the back line and the other teammate in the lower *All other Kroc Center facility and conduct rules apply to all who participate and observe Kroc Center events. left hand court behind the non-volley zone. This is how every doubles match service should begin. C. Volleys: To volley means to hit the ball in the air without first letting it bounce. In Pickleball, this can only be done when the player’s feet are behind the non-volley zone in front of the net. It is a fault if the player steps over the line on his volley follow-through. Volleys can only occur after the ball has hit each side of the court at least once. Each team must play their first shot off of the bounce. That is, the receiving team must let the serve bounce and the serving team must let the return of the serve bounce before playing it. Once these two bounces have occurred, the ball can either be volleyed or played off the bounce. This is known as the double-bounce rule.

D. Faults: A fault is committed when the ball: Is hit out of bounds. Does not clear net when serving or playing. Is volleyed inside the non-volley zone. Is volleyed before the ball bounces on each side first. E. Scoring: A team can only score when serving the ball. The game is played to 11 and a team must win by 2 points. After each point is made, the server must switch serving courts. (Start in the right hand court and after a point is made the same server serves in the left hand court). F. Singles Play: All of the same rules apply when playing singles, EXCEPT - when serving each player must serve from the right hand court when their score is 0 or an even number and from the left hand court when their score is an odd number. G. Time Limit: All games will have a 35 minute time limit. If time runs out before the match is complete in the third set (each team has won one game prior to this set), the team ahead at the time of expiration will be declared the winner. If the teams have each won a set and the time expires before the start of the third set, then the points from the first two sets will be added and the team with the most points will be declared the winner. During playoffs, there will be no time limit. All games will be played as best two of three sets regardless of time.
