II. GAMEPLAY *Official I.H.S.A. rules apply unless outlined with the following additions, exceptions, and clarifications: A. Time Factors Games are scheduled for 40 minutes in length. Each team is allowed one 30 second time out per match. If at any time the 40 minute time limit expires, the team ahead at that time wins that game. If the third game is tied after 40 minutes, the team who scores the next point wins (sudden death). EXCEPTION: During playoffs, there will be no time limits. B. Substitutions Substitutions will be at one of two locations: left front corner or serving corner. Once subbing begins, the same location and order must continue throughout the match. C. Scoring All three games will be played to 21 points; the first two games must win by 2 points, or be the first team to 25 points (cap is 25). In the third game the first team to 21 wins. If teams split the first two games and there is no time for a third. The team who has the most total number of points in both games gets the win. EXCEPTION: No time limits during playoffs. Standings will be kept by counting games. Matches will consist of three complete games. D. Start of Game/Coin Flip The captains will call the toss of the coin for choice of side of court or the service. The loser of the choice receives the remaining choice. Teams will switch sides of the court for the second game, and the team who did not serve to start the first game shall serve to start the second game. A coin toss will determine possession for the third game. E. Spiking Rules Only front row players may attack the ball (spike). A back line player may only attack the ball (spike) if they jump from BEHIND the ten foot line. Attacking a serve is prohibited. The rules for spiking differ between leagues, and are listed below. Co-ed 4v4 Power – Men can spike from anywhere on the court. Players can start anywhere on the court in 4v4, so all players are eligible spikers. F.
