RULE 1 - ELIGIBILITY I.

All matches will be played on the sand volleyball courts north of Watkins between Robinson and the Price Computing Center. Game balls will be provided by the Intramural Sports staff. RULE 3 - TEAM COMPOSITION AND SUBSTITUTIONS

A team shall consist of 4 players. A team must have at least 3 players to start and continue a game.

Substitutes can be made after any dead ball. The position of the substitute shall be that of the player replaced without changing the serving order. RULE 4 - THE SERVE

A serve is contact with the ball to initiate play. The server shall hit the ball with one hand, fist or arm while the ball is held, or after it is released by the server. A serve contacting and crossing the net shall remain in play provided the ball is entirely within parallel boundary lines.

A team continues to serving until it loses the rally or the set ends.
IV.
The first server of the set is the right back position. Therefore, when a team is awarded a loss of rally, the player in the right front position rotates to the serving area.

Blocking a served ball is not permitted. The team not serving first in the previous set of the match shall serve first in the next set. For a deciding set, the first serve is determined by the coin toss. P a g e |1 Rev. 01.18

A regulation match consists of the best two out of three sets. The first two sets shall be 25 points (no cap), and a team must win by two points.

The third and deciding set shall be 15 points (no cap), and a team must win by two points.

After the first and second sets, teams will exchange sides of the court.

Rally scoring will be utilized. A team does not have to serve to score a point. There will be a 40 minute time-limit per match. At the end of 40 minutes, the first team to gain a two-point lead will be declared the winner of that set. If the teams are in set two at the end of the 40 minute time-limit and the first team to gain a two point lead lost the first set, a third set will be played according to Rule 4-VIII. If the match is tied one-set to one-set at the end of the 40 minute time-limit, the first team to gain a two point advantage in the third set will be declared as the winner. If a team already has a two point advantage, they will be declared the winner of the set and the match. Each team is allowed one (1) timeout of sixty seconds in length per set. Unused timeouts do not carry over to the next set. RULE 6 - HITS

A team shall not have more than three hits before the ball crosses the net into the opponent’s playing area or is touched by the opponent. When the team’s first contact is simultaneous contact by opponents, or an action to block, the next contact is considered the team’s first hit. A ball is considered to have crossed the net when: a. It has passed completely beyond the vertical plane of the net; b. It is partially over the net and is contacted by an opponent; c. No part of the ball has crossed the net, and it is legally blocked. Legal contact is a touch of the ball by any part of a player’s body which does not allow the ball to visibly come to rest or involve prolonged contact with a player’s body. There are no positional gender restrictions.

There are no requirements for the alternating contacts, or both genders contacting the ball if played more than once on a side.
