INTRAMURAL SIT VOLLEYBALL RULES Rule 1 – Eligibility Rule 2 – Court and Equipment Rule 3 – Team Composition Rule 4 – Game Play Rule 5 – Hits RULE 1 - ELIGIBILITY I.

Please see your Intramural Sports Policies and Procedures for eligibility criteria. RULE 2 - COURT AND EQUIPMENT

All games will be played on the badminton courts located in the Ambler SRFC. Game balls will be provided by the Intramural Sports staff.

The ball will be declared out of bounds if it hits any other object not part of the court or net. A ball touching any part of a boundary line is in.

IV.

The height of the net shall be that of a badminton net at a height of 5 feet. RULE 3 - TEAM COMPOSITION

I.

A team shall consist of six (6) players. A team must have at least four (4) players to start and continue a game.

Substitutes can be made after any dead ball. The position of the substitute shall be that of the player replaced without changing the serving order. RULE 4 - GAME PLAY

A regulation match consists of the best two out of three sets. The first two games will be played to 25 points; winner must be ahead by two (2) points.

III.

The third game, if necessary, will be played to 15 points; winner must be ahead by two (2) points.

IV.

Rally scoring will be utilized. A team does not have to serve to score a point.

There will be a 40 minute time-limit per match. If the match is tied one-set to one-set at the end of the 40 minute time-limit, the first team to gain a two point advantage in the third set will be declared as the winner. If a team already has a two point advantage, they will be declared the winner of the set and match.

VII.

Each team is allowed one (1) timeout per game. Unused timeouts do not carry over to the next set. RULE 5 - HITS

I.

The server shall sit with his/her buttocks behind the rear boundary line and serve from any position behind the boundary line. There are no restrictions as to how the ball may be served except that it must be clearly hit, not thrown or pushed. a. “Let” serves are legal. This means a ball may touch the net on a serve, pass over the net, and be considered a legal serve. b. Blocking and spiking the ball off of a serve is illegal.

All players must have their back, buttocks, hips, or stomach in contact with the floor at all times. Any violation of this rule results in an immediate dead ball and side-out for the offended team.

III.

A contact is any touch of the ball by a player (excluding the players’ loose hair).

IV.

A hit is a contact/touch of the ball which is counted as one of the team’s three allowable plays before the ball is returned to the opponent’s side of the court.

A team shall not have more than three hits before the ball crosses the net into the opponent’s playing area or is touched by the opponent. When the team’s first contact is simultaneous contact by opponents, or an action to block, the next contact is considered the team’s first hit. Legal contact is touch of the ball by any part of a player’s body which does not allow the ball to visibly come to rest or involve prolonged contact with a player’s body.

VII.

A ball, other than a serve, may be recovered from the net provided the player avoids contact with the net and does not catch or hold the ball.

VIII.

Blocking is the act at the net which intercepts the ball coming from the opponent's side by making contact with the ball as it crosses the net, before it crosses the net, or immediately after it crosses the net. a. An attempt to block does not constitute a block unless the ball is contacted during an attempt. b. Only front row players may block.

IX.

A player may: a. Reach under the net as long as one doesn't interfere with an opponent's attempt to play the ball. b. Reach over the net to complete a spike which was begun on the player's own side of the net. c. Reach over the net to block, but not interfere with the opposing team's play. d. Have his or her foot touching the opponent's court as long as their buttocks, hips, back, or stomach are on the midline.

A net foul occurs while the ball is in play and; a. A player contacts any part of the net. It is not a fault when a player’s loose hair touches the net, or the force of a ball hit by an opponent pushes the net or net cables into the player. b. A player gains an advantage by contacting the floor/wall cables or standards. c. There is dangerous contact by a player with the floor/wall cables or standards. d. There is interference by a player who makes: i. Contact with an opponent which interferes with the opponent’s legitimate effort to play the ball. ii. Intentional contact with a ball which the opponent has caused to pass partially under the net or into the body of the net and the opponent is attempting to play it again. PENALTY: For a net fault or over-the-net fault, loss of rally/point is awarded to the opponent.
