FIRST® Robotics Scholarship (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) The FIRST® Robotics Scholarship was established in 2012 when the Paul & Judy Ulland Family was selected for the Lancer Wall of Excellence. Funds were contributed in memory of local engineering colleagues – James Tischer, Ronald Schomburg, John Moilanen – and scientist John Allen, together with tributes to family members and mentors who created the opportunity and encouragement for Paul to become an engineer; he was a Power Affiliates researcher at Iowa State University during graduate school, a drone aircraft electronic design and analysis engineer at Northrop Corporation in California, and a development and design engineer at Trane Company in La Crosse. Paul saw a need for more opportunities for students to consider and explore careers in engineering and related professions. His son Karsten was involved with MIT’s course 6.270, the follow‐on course of the Media Laboratory project “LEGO/Logo,” and became a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) mentor for high school students in Idaho. Younger son Justin reinforced the value of hands‐on experience by leading the Formula SAE Australian design team of the University of Wollongong to a world championship in 2003. His daughter Dorinda, a mathematics teacher, became a FIRST® LEGO® League & FRC coach. Inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 founded FIRST® ‐‐ an organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and collaborated with MIT Professor Woodie Flowers in creating a culture that celebrates these
fields of study. This scholarship is intended to encourage local students who participated in FIRST® robotics programs to pursue degrees in engineering, mathematics, science, and technology.
