BASIC ROLES OF EMERGENCY PERSONNEL 1. Establish Scene Safety and Immediate Care of the Student-Athlete: This should be provided by the most qualified individual on the emergency team. 2. Activation of Emergency Medical Services: Time is the most critical factor and this may be done by anyone on the team. However, the person chosen should be someone who is calm under pressure, communicates well, and is familiar with the location and address of the venue. 3. Equipment Retrieval: This may be done by anyone on the emergency team who is familiar with the types and locations of the specific equipment needed. The athletic training staff is a good choice for this role. 4. Directions of EMS to the Scene: One of the members of the team should be in charge of meeting the emergency medical personnel as they arrive at the site. This person should have keys to locked gates/doors, etc. 5.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION: is key to a quick, efficient emergency response. All emergency personnel should ensure their cell phones are charged prior to a practice or game event. Fixed telephone landlines: Located at the front desk of the Hale Center.

ACUTE MANAGEMENT OF THE SUSPECTED C-SPINE-INJURED ATHLETE (EQUIPMENT LADEN)

1. ACTIVATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES

2. STABILIZE C-SPINE IN A NEUTRAL POSITION

Note: This is a basic plan. Professional judgment should be used when a student-athlete is injured. Every situation is different and should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis (CPR assessment and body positioning). All individuals responsible for the care of student-athletes should be involved in regular rehearsals and skills training associated with the EAP.

3. M. LACROSSE ONLY REMOVE FACE MASK (DO NOT REMOVE HELMET OR SHOULDER PADS UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY AS IT MAY CAUSE UNWANTED MOVEMENT)

4. WHEN EMS ARRIVES, RU PERSONNEL COORDINATE STABILIZATION AND TRANSFER (USING EMS SPINE BOARD)
