COURTNEY PRUITT

Head Coach (Second Season) • 11-20 Overall, 8-10 SWAC Courtney Garrett Pruitt enters her second season as the third leader in school history to lead the Alcorn State women’s basketball program. In her first season at the helm, Pruitt led the Lady Braves to the second round of the SWAC tournament for the first time since the 2011-12 season and put her team in a prime position to beat the second-seeded Southern Lady Jaguars. The Lady Jags used a 21-8 fourth-quarter run to ultimately edge Alcorn 61-57. Under Pruitt’s tutelage, Norianna Haynes was named the 2015-16 SWAC Player of the Year. Haynes finished the regular season leading the SWAC in scoring with 568 points – 20.3 per game. She also topped the conference in double-doubles (12), as well as defensive rebounds (6.6 per game). Following Haynes’ stellar season, she signed to play professionally with Portugal’s Clube Desportivo Torres Novas. From 2011– 2015 she was the head coach at Wiley College where she led the Lady Wildcats to 3 NAIA National Tournament Appearances, 1 Final Four Appearance, 2 Red River Athletic Conference Titles, and 1 Tournament title. In 2014 she was also the recipient of the NAACP Coach Clifford E. Stewart sportsmanship award, for her leadership in sports and education. In her coaching career she has won over 100 games and is one of the youngest and fastest coaches to reach 100 career wins. Not only has Coach Pruitt led her team on the court but also off as she holds a 90% graduation rate for her student-athletes. In 2008-2010 during her years at Ranger College, she produced three conference players with an outstanding record marking the history books for the school accomplishments in women’s basketball. In 2010-2011, Pruitt continued her coaching career as she was named the assistant coach at Tyler Junior College. She helped lead the team to a 23-8 record as they produced one AllAmerican and three all-conference players. Pruitt began her coaching career at Lon Morris College in 2005. Under Pruitt

2016-17

PHOENIX – Junior Tia Sanders collected 12 points and six rebounds in her first career game with the Alcorn State University women’s basketball squad, but the Lady Braves dropped a 77-44 decision to Grand Canyon Friday night at GCU Arena.

“Hats off to GCU – they have a great team and excellent coaching staff,” said head coach Courtney Pruitt. “I thought our ladies did a great job rebounding the ball. We were able to get GCU into early foul trouble, however we had a poor shooting night and did not take care of the ball.” The Lady Braves shot 26 percent (13-50) from the field and committed 26 turnovers. However, Alcorn made its physical presence felt in the paint with a 43-38 rebounding advantage. The Lady Braves (0-1) were rattled by the Lopes (1-0) full-court pressure early, committing seven turnovers while being outscored 21-8 in the opening quarter. Alcorn trailed just 14-8 after Sanders’ jumper with 1:32 to go. GCU then scored seven quick points to close the quarter.

SEC 0-1

The Lady Braves kept pace in the second quarter as they were only outscored 19-14. The Lopes took advantage of seven Alcorn turnovers, turning those possessions into 11 points.

Southland 0-1 Sun Belt

Freshman guard Aysha Kirkland sparked the Lady Braves at the end of the quarter, breaking a 10-0 GCU run with a layup and three-pointer to close the half with the score 40-22 in the Lopes favor.

0-2

A low scoring third quarter ended in a 12-7 GCU advantage. Alcorn shot just 2-of-11 from the field including 1-for-6 from beyond the arc while suffering through two scoring droughts of around four minutes.

The Lady Braves were able to cut the turnovers down to four in the final frame but could not contain Rarrick as she knocked down all four of her shots from beyond the arc. Alcorn saw six different scorers in the final quarter.

Alcorn State University

Women’s Basketball ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn. Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presbyterians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its establishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components. Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the threeyear graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, including laundry, cost about $5 a month. In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres. In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource

allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified University. The student population is now representative of more than 65 counties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University provides an undergraduate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions. As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic backgrounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University operates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, including the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees. The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State University’s 19th president. President Rankins' background and vision are strategically aligned with Alcorn’s history and tradition. He is poised to expeditiously move Alcorn State University to the next level of excellence.
