Lady Pirates Basketball How to support your daughter and her team!

How to be a good FAN. 1. Cheer for our team. 2. Support each player of both teams. 3. Show respect for other schools even when it’s not shown to you. 4. Come to the games and have fun no matter the outcome.

How to be a poor sport. 1. Yell or question the referee/officials 2. Boo or make inappropriate comments to a player on the other team. 3. Be rude to visiting or host fans. 4. Talk badly about a player on our team. 5. Openly question coaching and player decisions. 6. Not coming to the games. 7. Allow your emotions to keep you from enjoying the game.

Know what THEIR goals are and accept them. If your goals for her don’t match yours, throw yours away and accept hers. You must release your daughter to the game and not live vicariously through them. Allow them to make mistakes. Allow them to workout situations on their own. Don’t run to their rescue. It makes them weaker in the long run. Model poise, confidence and correct behavior during games. Focus on our TEAM. Give them all the time and space they need after the game. If you have to say something say this “I loved watching the team play tonight.” LISTEN without making judgments. Don’t jump to conclusions or actions. Let her vent or let her get it out.

Come to all levels of competition, not just your daughters. Support the cheerleaders. If you encourage them they will be loud. Don’t “Coach” from the stands. Remember you can only play one role. Volunteer unconditionally for the team or booster club. Believe that your daughter’s coaches have their best interest at heart. Remember at all times it’s a high school extra curricular activity.

How to help your daughter if SHE has problems or concerns. 1. Playing time: a. Help her make a list of questions for the coach. They need to be HER questions. - For example: “What part of my game needs the most improvement?” b. Spend time on weekends shooting around and having fun in the driveway. -NOT FULL BLOWN PRACTICES! c. Help her understand her role on the team and support it 100%. d. Do NOT talk openly about how much better she is than one of her teammates! -Praise her don’t compare.

How to help your daughter if SHE has problems or concerns. 2. Grades/Classes. a. Make sure she is using time in class. b. Have her meet with the teacher before school if possible, or during RTI time/plus time. c. Check her grades or ask teachers for progress reports to stay on top of things. d. Have her fill out a daily assignment planner and check it each night. e. Try to avoid using basketball as punishment by threatening to take it away. Studies show that grades go up when kids are in activities.

How to help your daughter if SHE has problems or concerns. 3. Conflicts with teammates. a. Don’t pick sides. Be the adult. b. Help workout a strategy that might help her resolve the conflict. -ex: talking to the coach, team meeting. c. Empower you daughter. -Give her the chance to resolve the issue first, but be supportive. d. Teach life skills to use in the workplace. -We all can’t be best friends, but we can all learn to get along and work as a team.

How to help your daughter if SHE has problems or concerns. 4. Conflict with a coach. a. Help her write down what her concern is and talk with the coach by herself first. b. Have her go to another coach if she still has concerns. c. All three should meet: The coach, the player and the parent can talk. d. All four should meet: The coach, the player, the parent, and the A.D. e. Be supportive, but be the adult. Don’t fly off the handle and make irrational decisions based on emotion. Get all the facts and both sides first.
