Lake Superior State

6-11-7 overall, 4-8-6-4 CCHA LSSU (6-11-7 overall, 4-8-6-4 vs. Central Collegiate Hockey AsBowling Green sociation) sits in ninth place in 7-17-2 overall, 2-14-2 CCHA the CCHA with 22 points, while the Falcons (7-17-2 overall, Friday, 7:05 PM 2-14-2-0 CCHA) are 11th in the Saturday, 7:05 PM CCHA with eight points. Lake Superior State, which skated to back-to-back 1-1 ties and won both shootouts 2-1 during a December home series against Bowling Green State, looks to pick up the scoring pace during this weekend’s rematch with the Falcons. The Lakers and Falcons played two nearly identical games during the December match-up. BGSU scored both of its goals during the second period, while LSSU tied the game twice with third-period goals Six different Lakers notched one point each during the home series. Senior points leader Rick Schofield (10-11—21) and junior defenseman Kyle Haines (3-4—7) netted the game-tying goals for LSSU. In their last five games, the Lakers are 0-2-3 with shootout victories over Michigan State and Western Michigan. They have tied three straight, all at home, and are one tie away from matching their school record for singleseason tie games, which is eight (2008-09). LSSU and WMU currently lead the CCHA in shootout victories with four each. The Lakers are 4-2 in shootouts this season. Sophomore forward Nick McParland (5-4—9) is tied for sixth in the CCHA (when playing against league opponents) in game-winning goals with two. Freshman goaltender Kevin Kapalka (5-6-6-4) sits in third place against league opponents in save percentage (.928), seventh place in goalsagainst average (2.18) and is tied for eighth place in winning percentage (.500).

The Lakers competed in back-to-back shootouts for the second time this season. Schofield netted both game-tying goals with less then a minute left in regulation time, scoring both goals with an extra-attacker. The Lakers lost Friday’s shootout 3-1 in three-rounds, but were victorious Saturday, 1-0 in seven-rounds. Freshman foward Kyle Jean netted the only shootout goal Saturday. Schofield totaled 2-2--4 for the series. Western Michigan’s and Lake Superior State’s seven-round shootout last Saturday set a new CCHA record for the most shootout attempts before a goal was scored with 13. The previous record of 10 shooters was set on Feb. 20, 2010, in a six-round shootout between the Broncos and Ohio State.

Lake Superior State coach Jim Roque Jim Roque stormed onto the head coaching scene in 2005-06 by leading LSSU to its first winning season in six years and to its first home-ice berth in the CCHA Playoffs since 1999-00. During his second season, the Lakers finished 21-19-3 and reached the CCHA semifinals at Joe Louis Arena for the first time since 1995-96. The Lakers are 72-91-30 during Roque’s five-year tenure, including 15-18-5 in 200910. Last year’s team had its share of wire-to-wire thrillers and finished 8-6 in one-goal games, making a vast improvement from the 1-12 record in 2008-09. The 2010-11 squad has 10 newcomers, but returns four of its top five scorers. Roque became the ninth coach in the 42-year history of Laker hockey when he replaced Frank Anzalone in June of 2005. He is the second former Laker player to take the helm of the LSSU program. Roque’s most-recent of three LSSU assistant coaching stints ran from 2001-02 through 2004-05. Previously, he was an assistant coach for the Lakers from 1988-91 and also in 1994-95. After six seasons as an assistant at Clarkson University, he returned to LSSU again in 2001. Roque also coached in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League from 1991-93. After graduating from LSSU in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree

in management, the Killarney, Ont., native started his coaching career as an assistant under Anzalone and stayed on to work with former coach Jeff Jackson. This is his 11th overall season as a coach at LSSU. Roque played for the Lakers from 1983-87 and totaled 56 goals and 144 career points, which ranks 19th on the Lakers’ career points list. Roque was a part of the first recruited class brought in by Anzalone and was also a member of the first Laker squad to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 1985. The only other former Laker who went on to become the program’s head coach was Rick Comley, who is now the head coach of the Michigan State Spartans. He coached at LSSU from 1973-76. Roque was on the LSSU coaching staff when it won the 1988 NCAA Championship, and he recruited the majority of the 1992 title team. He has played a role in all five NCAA Tournament appearances and was part of two CCHA playoff titles and two regular-season titles. At Clarkson, he coached two Hobey Baker finalists and four National Hockey League players (Todd White, Erik Cole, Chris Clark and Willie Mitchell). He was also a part of three Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) regular-season titles, four NCAA Tournament berths and one playoff championship. He and his wife, Julia, have two children—Emma (15) and Abby (13).
