NOTE OF THE NIGHT
Something in Common Oswego State and Middlebury have played against seven common opponents this season – Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Hobart, New England College, Norwich, Hamilton, and Fredonia. The Lakers own a 7-2-2 record in 11 games against those teams, while Middlebury is 4-3-1 in eight games against those opponents. NEED TO KNOW: THE LAKERS AND PANTHERS
Third-Period Dominance Oswego State has outscored its opponents 49-12 in the third period of games this season, and used its third-period scoring prowess in Saturday’s comeback win over top-ranked St. Norbert. Tyler Lyon’s goal was the only tally of the period and tied the score 3-3, setting up the overtime period. Meeting You Again Today’s championship game is the fourth all-time meeting between Middlebury and Oswego State in the NCAA Tournament. The last meeting was a 6-0 Oswego State win in the 2003 Frozen Four semifinals at Kreitzberg Arena in Northfield, Vt. The first two tournament meetings were Middlebury wins in a quarterfinal series in 1998 at Kenyon Arena, by scores of 5-1 and 6-3. First Time for Everything The Laker program is seeking its first ever NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey championship, and first NCAA title in any team sport. Oswego State All-Americans Oswego State sophomore forward Brendan McLaughlin and junior goalie Ryan Scott were named East Region Second Team All-Americans by the American Hockey Coaches Association earlier this week. Scott is the first Laker goalie to earn All-America since Pete Sears in 1970. Sears is the Lakers’ goalie coach. Semifinal Success The Lakers have never lost in the NCAA semifinals in their three trips to the Frozen Four. In 1987, Oswego State defeated St. Cloud State 5-2 in 1987; Middlebury 6-0 in 2003; and St. Norbert 4-3 in overtime on Saturday. |

Oswego State Head Coach
Tale of the Tape
Ed Gosek
Oswego State Lakers
A former Laker player and assistant coach, Ed Gosek became the fifth head coach in Oswego State history in April of 2003. Gosek joined the coaching staff in 1990 and worked under both Don Unger and George Roll, before taking the reigns of the Oswego State program. Each team Gosek has been a part of as a player, assistant coach, and head coach has qualified for post-season play, 10 of which have advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Known as a strong recruiter, Gosek looks to continue to bring in quality student-athletes while maintaining the rich hockey tradition at Oswego State as the Lakers began play in the Campus Center Ice Arena in 2006. His commitment and dedication to the program have been instrumental in the Lakers consistently being considered among the elite teams in the nation. Prior to his appointment as head coach in 2003, Gosek focused on developing the team’s defense along with special teams. The coach earned his undergraduate degree in 1983 and his master’s degree in Science and Education in 2001, both from Oswego State. Ed, his wife Mary, and children Jeremy and Sarah, make their home in Oswego.
Campus Center Ice Arena
A Grand Opening
The Oswego State men’s hockey team officially opened the Campus Center Ice Arena with a 4-3 win over Utica on Oct. 20. A sellout crowd of 2,980 saw the first intercollegiate athletic contest in the new facility. Distinguised Oswego State alums New York State Senator James Wright ‘71 and ESPN SportsCenter anchor Steve Levy ‘87 were on hand for pregame ceremonies. C.J. Thompson scored the first goal, which came at 2:09 of the first period, assisted by Mark Lozzi. Thompson also had the first powerplay goal in the new building. Brendan McLaughlin’s second-period tally was the first game-winning goal. Ryan Scott was the first winning goalie. Oswego State finished the season with a 14-2-0 home record. 2 0 0 7

OSWEGO STATE TEAM AND PLAYER NOTES
Record-Breaking Start The Lakers set a program record for the longest unbeaten streak to start a season, at 17 games, with a record of 14-0-3. This year’s team started the year with an eight-game winning streak, which was the longest winning streak to start a season in program history. The streak ended with a 5-2 loss at Utica on Jan. 23. Another Laker Record By allowing just 1.89 goals-against per game this year, Oswego State is on pace to break its best single-season defensive record. The previous best defensive season for the Lakers came in 2004-05 when Oswego State allowed 66 goals in 27 games, for a 2.44 team goals-against average. Six-Point Star Sophomore forward Brendan McLaughlin had six points in the same game twice this season and has achieved that impressive statistic three times in his career. McLaughlin had two goals and four assists in an 8-0 win over Fredonia on Nov. 10 and three goals and three assists in a 6-0 win over Brockport on Jan. 26. As a freshman, he scored five goals and recorded an assist in a win over Buffalo State on Nov. 4, 2005. McLaughlin leads the Lakers in scoring (24-30–54) and ranks tied for third nationally. Great Scott Oswego State junior goalie Ryan Scott already ranks among the leading goalies in Laker history. His 45 career wins place him third all-time. His career goals-against average (2.40) and save percentage (.912) are the lowest in Laker history. He is tied with Tyson Gajda atop the Laker record book with six career shutouts. Scott was the Second Team All-SUNYAC goaltender. The Laker Captain Oswego State senior center Ryan Woodward, a Second Team East Region AllAmerican last year, will end his career among the all-time leaders in scoring at Oswego State. Woodward currently stands 21st in career scoring with 145 points. With one more point, Woodward will move into a tie for 19th with Rob Duke and Gregg Pechmann. No Sophomore Slumps Eight Oswego State sophomores are on pace to surpass their point totals from last year. Through 28 games this year, forwards Brendan McLaughlin, Peter Magagna, Garren Reisweber, Matt Whitehead, Mark Lozzi, and Derrell Levy have increased their scoring averages. Defensemen Rich Zalewski and Tyler Laws are also scoring at a better points-per-game rate than they did last year. NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Headed West This weekend’s event will be the first games that Oswego State has played outside of New York and New England states in their NCAA Tournament history. Playing Up Three of Oswego State’s all-time NCAA Tournament opponents are now NCAA Division I hockey programs – UMass Lowell of Hockey East, St. Cloud State of the WCHA, and RIT of Atlantic Hockey. The Lakers lost playoff series to UMass Lowell in 1982 and 1983 and to RIT in 1984 and 1989. Oswego State defeated St. Cloud State 5-2 in an NCAA Tournament semifinal game in 1987 at Plattsburgh. |
