Living in RichmondAmsterdam, TwickenDenHaag and Rotterdamington The Mini Hollands are coming! The new Mayor – like all the mayoral candidates – committed to London Cycling Campaign’s three big asks: -
More space for cycling on main roads and junctions A ‘Mini Holland’ for every borough An end to lorry danger
So we’ve started thinking about what a Mini Holland in our borough looks like. A Mini Holland project – like the major super highway projects which have now gone live in London – is about walking as much as it’s about cycling. In the boroughs that have already started, they’ve improved town centres, made residential roads quieter, and made them calmer, easier places to use. We want that for Richmond borough, and we’ll be talking to the council about how we get there. For example, why are there two lanes of motor traffic through the centre of Richmond? Why do our major town centres look more like places to drive through, then places to stop at? We’ll be asking for things like ‘filtered permeability’, which makes roads easier to use for walking and cycling by discouraging through traffic; safe places to cycle – like the new separated routes in central London; and streets that are pleasant for everyone to use, whether it’s children playing out, riding to school, adults getting to the shops, or just being able to get around without the fear of being a traffic statistic. New Broom? There’s been some changes at the council, and we have a new Cabinet Member for Transport. Councillor Speak has moved to a new role, and Cllr Peter Buckwell (South Richmond). As the only councillor in his ward who supported our space4cycling ‘ward ask’, we’re optimistic that he will be carrying on, and enhancing significantly, the changes we’ve seen slowly coming through.
What Changes? There’s quite a lot going on in the borough, and in neighbouring boroughs. In particular, we’ll need your help in the next few months – • • • • • • •
Coming to see us at Bikefest (June 25th, 11-4) in Kneller Gardens Kingston Mini-Holland consultations will be going live More on-street bike parking, and our first ‘proper’ overnight bike parking in the borough Trying out the new cycle superhighways with a ‘Kiddical Mass’ sometime in June … Next steps for the Quietways from last issue An “all ways green” junction in Twickenham Fixing more cycle parking around the borough
Being Social … Finally, if you like doing stuff on social media, we could do with some help. As well as keeping the council on its toes, it’s important for us to be able to share all the events and activities which support cycling in the borough. Can you help us with Twitter or Facebook? Drop a line
[email protected] if you’re interested, and if you’d like to try reaching the thousands of locals who follow our tweets and FB pages!
Parking – Still! Parking bikes is becoming more and more of a problem – albeit a good one. The latest problems are at Richmond Library, where library staff are complaining about non-library visitors using parking. We’d like the council to trial one of these outside, to get an idea of how much parking demand there is in the area, because we think there’s a lot of suppressed demand – what do you think?
