THERE IS A MOVEMENT UNDERWAY IN OREGON: EVERY STUDENT GRADUATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL READY FOR THEIR FUTURE.
Teachers, principals, superintendents and community partners are coming together across the state to raise Oregon’s graduation rate and make our schools the best in the country. Nike School Innovation Fund is a proud participant in this movement, along with our partners at the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, The Oregon Community Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust and the State of Oregon.
“There is no lack of creativity and willingness to try new innovative approaches in our schools. Our goal is to help unlock that creativity and give schools, principals, teachers and children the resources to succeed.” MARK PARKER Nike, Inc. President and CEO
Over the last two years, Nike School Innovation Fund has provided $3.4 million in grants to implement or expand AVID — a global nonprofit dedicated to closing the achievement gap — in Oregon schools and districts. 99% of AVID students in Oregon* graduated from high school on time, with 95% reporting plans to attend college. AVID’s impact on student success led Nike School Innovation Fund to select them as a partner. Thanks to the combined efforts of our partners and to dedicated school and district staff, AVID is now in 215 Oregon schools.

WHAT IS NIKE SCHOOL INNOVATION FUND? FUELING EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, BECAUSE OREGON’S SUCCESS STARTS WITH OUR STUDENTS. Nike’s spirit of innovation has helped athletes break records and reach personal heights, and we are committed to doing the same for Oregon’s kids — helping them achieve their dreams and goals in the classroom and beyond. Since 2007, Nike has partnered with school leaders in Oregon, to support teachers and engage students in realizing their potential. We have invested over $12 million to date in our schools.
NIKE SCHOOL INNOVATION FUND: » Invests in education as the driving force behind a thriving community.
» Leads with our most valuable resource – our people.
» Partners with districts across Oregon to support their strategic priorities.
In 2015, we turned our attention to high school, where too many students disengage or drop out. With our partners, Nike School Innovation Fund launched a statewide initiative to increase the number of students who graduate on time and prepare them to succeed after graduation. Although the majority of our financial resources go to support proven best practices, the heart of the fund is the engagement of our people. In addition to funding, Nike commits its leaders’ time and expertise to assist school leaders with strategy and innovation.

OUR STRATEGY IMPACT The majority of our funding goes toward an Oregon statewide initiative to implement or expand AVID — a highly successful, proven program that can grow to benefit all Oregon students. While the AVID elective closes achievement gaps, AVID strategies schoolwide raise the rigor and expectations for all students. These strategies are both sustainable and scalable.

The heart and soul of our program is our partnership with local high schools. Nike Leaders are paired with 10 local high schools to innovate new ways to address the unique needs of their students. Ten percent of the Fund goes toward innovating new ways to create educational success, by pairing Nike leaders with a select group of our partner schools, to address the unique needs of their students. Teachers ultimately know what’s best for their students. By bringing school leaders together with Nike leaders, we hope our insights and approach can amplify and even accelerate innovative ideas from the classroom.

WHEN KIDS SUCCEED, WE ALL WIN.
INCOME GAIN OVER A LIFETIME
It is in Nike’s DNA to inspire and innovate. Teachers and school administrators are innovators, too — working hard to close the opportunity gap and help every student graduate with the skills they need to succeed in life. When we created the Fund in 2007, we asked a lot of questions about the needs of Oregon’s schools. We heard from leaders who wanted to try new ideas. We also heard that the resources weren’t always there to implement and sustain them. The Fund provides resources to support key program innovations in schools, as well as personal involvement from Nike leaders and partners. We are working hard to make sure the results are sustainable, scalable and transformative across the state, so students can walk into any classroom, and expect a rigorous and relevant education. OREGON HAS BEEN OUR HOME FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS. OUR ROOTS RUN DEEP, AND SO DOES OUR COMMITMENT TO GETTING KIDS ACTIVE AND STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES. PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN SCHOOLS + NIKE LEADERS What if we could help better prepare students for their futures by sharing Nike’s approach to innovation with schools? That’s what a select group of innovative schools embarked on in 2015/2016. A committed and enthusiastic group of Nike Leaders partnered with 12 schools to support teams of teachers, students and principals. Each school was given additional grant funding to implement their ideas. SEVERAL THEMES EMERGED FROM THIS WORK: Making learning more engaging and relevant to real life. Lincoln and Liberty High Schools used funds to help make algebra classes more real-life relevant, while Southridge, Sunset and Lincoln High Schools introduced career-oriented classes such as digital filmmaking, journalism or engineering. Helping freshmen finish 9th grade on track to graduate Hillsboro High School created a peer and adult mentoring program for Hispanic boys. Century High School brought freshman to Nike to learn transition management skills. Finally, Roosevelt High School created a leadership class with an orientation program and a film designed to dispel myths about their high school and bring the strengths of their school culture to life. Clarifying schools’ vision, brand and voice Beaverton, Century and Rex Putnam High Schools used their Nike Leader’s branding expertise to articulate their schools’ authentic voice, and to build a common language and vision.
WHAT’S NEXT? In 2016/2017, Nike Leaders will dive deeper into the vision and voice work, piloting a process and programs called FUTURE YOU to help schools clarify their authentic voice and better engage students in creating their own futures. We’ll be sure to share what we learn from this work.

“Design thinking supports us in thinking from the perspective of new students and familiesto view them as our customers.”
STORIES OF PARTNERSHIP BEAVERTON HIGH SCHOOL
Margo Fowler, Vice President & Global Counsel, Brand Services & Compliance, is in her second year working as a Nike Leader with Beaverton High School (BHS) principal Anne Erwin. Together with members of the BHS administration and faculty, and Nike leaders, they’ve created the Future You branding framework to focus and align student and faculty efforts so all BHS students graduate prepared for and excited about the futures they choose. “The power in the Future You framework is that it provides an inspiring, focused lens to filter BHS initiatives for greater impact,” says Fowler. Future You will also help Erwin and her staff respond to shifting realities—economic and
technical. “Every space in our school needs to be a 21st century learning site—the library, choir room, weight room, and every classroom,” she says. Nike talent development experts shared “design thinking” strategies with BHS to help shape Future You, focusing on staff and students needs first and foremost, “not what I or other administrators have decided is the way to solve a particular problem,” says Erwin. “This process helps us think about how we will work collaboratively toward effective change.” One upcoming challenge for BHS is the influx of 500 new students next year, while 500 current students will be going to other high schools,
ANNE ERWIN Beaverton High School Principal
due to redrawing of school district boundaries. “Future You will be instrumental in welcoming new students and their families, and in reasserting goals for those who are already here,” says Fowler. Adds Erwin: “Design thinking supports us in thinking from the perspective of new students and families—to view them as our customers.” Perhaps the most telling aspect of Future You’s success so far is Erwin’s confidence in the ideas behind it. “We’re doing things that go way beyond the $20,000 grant that goes with this program. The ideas we’ve generated have been the most powerful aspect of our partnership with Nike.”

STORIES OF PARTNERSHIP ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL
Brandis Russell, Senior Footwear Product Director at Nike, is partnering with Roosevelt High School Principal Filip Hristic to increase success among incoming freshmen. After meeting with juniors and seniors from a Roosevelt leadership class about the challenges they see at school, Russell and Hristic asked them to interview freshmen about their initial impressions, and how the experience could be more supportive — so they’ll be more likely to fully engage in their education all the way through graduation.
“We want to set 9th graders up to succeed, and help the leadership students develop their skills at the same time,” says Russell. The leadership students came up with several ideas to ease the transition and pitched them to Principal Hristic and school administrators. Grant funds were used to help students implement several ideas, including making a film, “Velt Up,” using student voices to bring Roosevelt’s unique culture to life. They screened the film at an all-school assembly and will take it to middle schools as part of the orientation program they created.
“Our effort has to go beyond just a grant. It has to resonate, and the best wa y to do that is get the people who will be impacted involved. The students are the ones carrying the torch, creating the culture shift.” BRANDIS RUSSEL Senior Footwear Product Director
“This partnership has enabled us to think creatively about our school priorities and to leverage some of the amazing resources that Nike has to offer,” says Hristic. “Brandis is a great listener and thought partner.”

STORIES OF PARTNERSHIP SOUTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL
Mat Johnson, Senior Director Brand Events, is in his second year working with Southridge High School in Beaverton. This year he is helping new Principal David Nieslanik lay the groundwork for a boundary transition that will result in a 40 percent shift in student population in the next school year. Johnson joined a vision team made up of parents, students, teachers and administrators. Their goal is to clearly define the school’s culture and principles around learning, so students and parents can easily take ownership of their Southridge experience.
“There are no words to describe how important the visioning work has been,” says Nieslanik. “Mat is the ultimate professional. He has been instrumental in helping us plan communications and key performance indicators, and is empowering us to do it without dictating how it’s done.” “Communication creates collective interest and elevates the value of our partnership,” says Johnson. “Combining Nike knowledge with Southridge spirit is proving extremely valuable. It’s exciting as we create new opportunities for students that ultimately will help the whole school achieve results.”
“We are partnering with schools to leverage their own creativity and innovation. When you combine the passion and experience of great educators, with our people and resources, the combination is unstoppable.” HEIDI O’NEILL VP and General Manager of Nike Stores, Nike School Innovation Fund co-founder
David and Mat have also worked on career pathway planning for students, including computer science and engineering design, and digital filmmaking. Students are already responding with enthusiasm. “These classes offer depth and hands-on learning that will earn students a certificate that can get them into the workplace faster,” says Nieslanik. “And it wouldn’t have happened as quickly without NSIF.” Southridge is one of 12 Portland-area high schools that received a $20,000 Nike School Innovation grant to put toward these programs.
