Definition of Health Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmary

Six Elements of Health • Physical Health • Emotional Health • Social Health • Environmental Health • Spiritual Health • Intellectual Health Self‐Reported Health was measured in 2007 • were asked to rate their health as excellent, very good, good, fair or poor. • 54.3% of Victorians either excellent or very good.

Psychosocial Health Psychological health includes mental, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions Psychologically healthy people: • Feel good about themselves • Feel comfortable with other people • Control tension and anxiety • Are able to meet the demands of life • Curb hate and guilt • Maintain a positive outlook • Value diversity • Enrich the lives of others Mental Health A mentally healthy person perceives life in realistic ways, can adapt to change, can develop rational strategies to solve problems, and can carry out personal and professional responsibilities. • “Thinking” or “rational” part of psychological health • Mentally healthy people tend to respond to life’s challenges constructively. • Irrational thinking may indicate poor mental health. Emotional Health The “feeling” you or subjective side of psychological health that includes emotional reactions to life • Emotions involve feelings ‐e.g. Love, hate, frustration, anxiety, and joy Richard Lazarus (1999) noted 5 basic, automatic emotions: • anger • fear • sadness • disgust • happiness ◦ Complex emotions (e.g. grief, disappointment) • Emotions are intensified feelings • Emotionally healthy people respond appropriately to upsetting events • Are able to express their feelings, communicate with others and show emotions in different ways. • Emotional health affects social and intellectual health. • Emotional turmoil may seriously affect your ability to think, reason, and act rationally. Factors that Influence Psychological Health 1. The Family • Children raised in dysfunctional families may have a harder time adapting to life and run an increased risk of psychological problems. 2. Self‐Efficacy and Self‐Esteem • Self‐Efficacy • Belief in one’s ability to perform a task successfully • Self‐Esteem • Sense of self‐respect or self‐worth 4. Learned Helplessness/Learned optimism ‐ Martin Seligman • Learned Helplessness: people who continually experience failure • they give up, and fail to take any action themselves. • Learned Optimism: teaches that people can learn optimism just as they learned helplessness. • “Positive affirmations” 5. Personality In general, people who possess the following personality traits often appear to be psychologically healthy: • Extroversion • Agreeableness • Openness to experience • Emotional stability • Conscientiousness • Resiliency 6. Life Span and Maturity • Our temperaments change as we move through life. • The university years • critical transition period from teenagers and secondary school to young adults • may move away from their families • establish themselves as adults • Those who do not accomplish developmental tasks, such as learning how to solve problems and evaluate decisions, may find their lives interrupted by recurrent rises later on. Strategies to Enhance Psychological Health • Find a support group. • Complete required tasks. • Form realistic expectations. • Make time for you. • Maintain physical health. • Examine problems and seek needed help. • Get adequate sleep. Mental Illness Mental Illness: • Disrupt thinking • Feeling • Moods • Behaviors can cause some level of impaired functioning Causes: • life events • by biochemical or brain dysfunction. • Stress, abusive relationships, anxiety, loneliness, financial upheavals • other trauma HBS110 Page 5
