LEED Certification
7
LEED Prerequisites and Credits Prerequisites Required Credits Optional Credit Weightings Each credit is allocated points based on the relative importance of the building‐related impacts that it addresses. 7
Carbon Overlay Wingspread Principles on a U.S. Response to Global Warming. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% to 80% below 1990 levels by midcentury.
7
Carbon Overlay Score for Each Credit based on Carbon Footprint Building’s Carbon Footprint Total Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions associated with it construction and operation
7
Carbon Overlay GHG Emissions Associated With: • Energy used by building systems • Building‐related transportation • Embodied emissions of water (electricity used to extract, convey, treat, and deliver water) • Embodied emissions of solid waste (life‐cycle emissions associated with solid waste) • Embodied emissions of materials (emissions associated with the manufacture and transport of materials)

LEED Certification Process A project must satisfy three requirements for certification: 1. Meet the Minimum Program Requirements 2. Satisfy all Prerequisites 3. Satisfy a combination of credits that achieve a certain number of points for the desired certification level.
7
LEED Certification Process 1. Register Register the Project and Pay Registration Fee – should be done early (pre‐design phase) Projects are registered online at www.gbci.org
7
LEED ONLINE Web Based Tool Used to Manage the LEED Project Certification Team Administrator Project Team Members
7
LEED Certification Process 2. Application Submit all documentation for Design Credits and Construction Credits to be reviewed by USGBC and pay certification fee. Certification Fee is based on: Membership Project Square Footage
7
LEED Certification Process OR 2. Application Split Review Submit Design Credits for review by USGBC before completion and apply for construction‐related credits after the project finishes and the remaining fee.
7
LEED Certification Process LEED Rating Systems that follow a different process: LEED for Homes multistep process. Involves: LEED for Homes provider Homebuilder Green Rater Home Energy Rater
7
LEED Certification Process LEED for Neighborhood Development LEED for Neighborhood Development follows the typical neighborhood development process— which can take years or even decades.
