All seams are sewn with fabrics right sides together with a ¼" seam allowance unless otherwise directed.
Sewing
For ease, the center star design is made in four quarters. The diamond shapes are sewn to each triangle unit. Careful layout of the diamonds will make this sew up quickly! Half-square triangle units: Using the 10 3⁄8" squares, pair one Ditsy Brown and one Swirl Orange, right sides together. On the wrong side, pencil mark from corner to corner; sew ¼" from each side. Make two. Cut on pencil mark and press open to make four halfsquare triangle units. Pin and sew an Skin & Lace Orange triangle to each side of the Ditsy Brown triangle, as shown, matching square corners. Make four of these large triangle units. Diamonds: To be sure you are sewing the correct sides, lay out a large triangle section, four of the Diamonds, and four Reverse-Cut Diamonds of Ditsy Red and Floral Heads Orange. It may be helpful to pencil mark the ¼" seam lines, then pin in the intersections. Sew, press, and trim the dog ears to make four diamond units and four reversed units. Pin and sew the diamond units to the short sides of the large triangle units; start sewing ¼" from the center, to allow for next section to be a set-in seam. Pin and sew next section, starting ¼" from center. Keeping large triangle point out of the way, match the center points of the center diamonds, pin, and sew to within ¼" of end. Press toward diamond units, to keep triangle flat. Repeat to make all four sections.
Center Star: Lay out and sew two triangle/diamond sections together, matching center point of diamonds and seam intersections. Pin and stitch to within ¼" of end diamond to allow for a set-in square in the corners. Finally, lay out the two halves, and carefully match center. If desired, partial stitch in center for perfect matched points before sewing long seams. Match intersections, pin, and stitch to within ¼" of end diamond to allow for a set-in square.

Set-in square: To finish the corners, use the 5" square (cut slightly oversize). Match to the center of the intersecting diamonds, pin, and sew starting ¼" from corner, out to the edge. Keeping diamond’s seam allowance out of the way, match remaining corner, pin, and sew starting ¼" from corner, out to the edge. Press set-in square flat for a neat finish. Center unit should measure approximately 36". Borders: Before adding borders, check that corners and edges are square. Keep ¼" seam allowances on all star and triangle points, and trim if corner squares or triangles were cut oversize. To check length of side borders, lay 37" Ditsy Brown border over center of quilt, and trim to match size. Move to outside edge, pin, and stitch. Repeat with top and bottom, checking size to keep your quilt square. Add the large outer borders (Primal Fever Gold) in the same manner – 40" sides first, then 54" top and bottom. +

Backing: From the 3 ½ yard length of Skin & Lace Yellow, cut one 60" x w.o.f. length. Cut the remaining length to measure 19" x 60". Sew the two lengths together with a ½" seam along the 60" sides to make a backing with a horizontal seam. Press seam open (Diagram Q). Your backing should measure 60" x 60". Quilting: In large triangle areas, a scroll or small wave pattern was used. In the star and diamond, radiating lines, feathers, or leaves will accent the bold direction of the star points. The borders were quilted in large paisley and leaves similar to the fabric design. Binding: Sew binding strips end-to-end into one continuous length, approximately 250". With wrong sides together, fold in half lengthwise and press. Sew binding to the front of the quilt and turn to back. Finish by hand using a blind hem stitch. © 2009 Studio e Fabrics ®
