Move over Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, you’re old news! Lincoln Orens’ Student Council had their own Presidential elections and it’s the talk of the town. With much less drama and much more grace, our candidates went all out to get their names heard. The Student Council candidates ran exciting campaigns, including speeches, eye-catching posters with slogans. Some even created their own t-shirts to help promote their campaign. Candidates included Andrew Moran, Dillon DaSilva, Abel Rodriguez, Orquidia Garcia, Lania Shedrick, Nico Buro, Sophia Cerreto, Fabiana Boncina, Kirsten Lilly, Abigail Alvarado, Anthony Berzosa, Marcie Crowley, Kaelyn Polete, and Emily Feil. The winners of the 2016-2017 Lincoln Orens’ Student Council Elections were… President– Abel Rodriguez Vice President- Orquidia Garcia Secretary– Emily Feil Treasurer– Kirsten Lilly

In addition to running the school’s elections, the 33 student council representatives are also working hard to help our school and our community. In October, they ran their annual Anti-Bully Poster Contest to help bring awareness to this ongoing concern. The top ten winners had their posters enlarged and displayed in the halls of L.O.M.S. The top ten winners of this contest were: Allyson Baetiong, Angelica Adames, Robin Xiao, Celeste Consigli, Gia Rebele, Scott Perez, Kaelyn Polete, Emmalee Egan, Colleen Reichel, and Jillian Goldbach. The top three award recipients received gift cards for their creative posters and all winners got their posters enlarged. You can see their posters displayed throughout Lincoln Orens’ hallways. Student Council (Continued from page 1) To further support anti-bullying in our local communities, the student council ran a “Loose Change Fundraiser” to help raise money for a memorial bench on Long Beach’s boardwalk in memory of Brendan Carr, an eighth grader who was a student at Long Beach Middle School. Our school raised $1,000.00 for his memorial. In conjunction with the AntiBully Poster Contest, student council members worked diligently to create and handmake over 300 anti-bully awareness pins for the students and staff at Lincoln Orens. They believe that awareness can help prevent bullying and they’re working hard to make sure they become part of the solution. Clearly, November was a busy month for the student council. In addition to their elections and anti-bully awareness campaigns, they also diligently worked with the Transportation Department and the Builder’s Club to help coordinate our

Thanksgiving Food Drive. Students organized and collected food to feed many local families a hearty, traditional Thanksgiving Day meal. All donations were enormously appreciated, and were a clear example of the generosity of the Lincoln Orens’ faculty and of Island Park’s residents! Currently, student council members are enthusiastically spreading the word about their annual Holiday Toy Drive. All donations of new and unused toys will be wrapped and delivered to less fortunate families this holiday season.
Ms. Betancourt and Mr. Bobko are extremely proud of the hard-work, dedication, and determination that this year’s student council members have shown. “Their drive and ambition to make Lincoln Orens Middle School an even better place than it already is, is what drives us to be better advocates for our students.” Stated Ms. Betancourt. Similarly, Mr. Bobko commented, “Our student council members strive to make Lincoln Orens the best school possible. They consistently utilize their voice and listening skills to represent the student body.”

Interview With Mr. Randazzo Who or what inspired you to become a principal? “I loved being a teacher and working with students, but each year I could only work with approximately 120 students. So, I thought if I became an administrator, I’d be able to impact and work with a lot more students. That’s why I became an administrator. As far as who inspired me to become a principal, that was my mentor, Debra VanNostrand. She was a principal that I worked under as a teacher and a dean. She was wonderful with students and she was very supportive with the faculty. She was also very inspiring and she showed me what it means to be a true leader!” What did you do before you were the LOMS principal? “I was the principal of the Robert F. Kennedy Middle School in Flushing, New York. Before that I was an assistant principal at the Walter H. Crowley Intermediate school. Prior to that, I was the dean of discipline in the same school.

What do you consider the biggest challenge working with the middle school students?
“All the different personalities. What I’d like to add to that is that it’s a challenge, but also the best part of my job. It’s great to have so many students, with so many different personalities, and getting to know everyone. What do you do on the weekends? “I have three kids, an 8 year old boy, Alessio, a 6 year old girl, Guiliana, and a 17 month old boy, Massimo. I spend a lot of time with my kids, and I coach my sons’ soccer team. That keeps me very busy on the weekends” Were you ever a teacher? If so, what did you teach? “I taught 7th and 8th grade S.S. and I taught 8th grade Earth Science. I was also the dean of discipline for three years.” What do you enjoy most about being a principal? “My students! By this I mean spending time with students both inside and outside of the classroom. I really enjoy visiting them in their classes, watching them learn and work hard. I also like spending time getting to know each one of them on a personal level.”

Interview With Mr. Randazzo What are your favorite television shows? “I like to watch a lot of sports. As you can tell in my office, I’m a huge Yankees and Giants fan. I love watching baseball, football and soccer. I also like to watch the National Geographic channel.”
Did you have any heroes or role models as a kid? “Yes. My mother and my father were born in Italy and immigrated here in the 1960s. They worked extremely hard and became very successful people. My parents inspire me each and every day, helping to instill a great work ethic in me. They are both my heroes and my role models. If you weren’t a principal, what would you be? “I’d love to be a fisherman. My favorite hobby is to fish. I would love to fish on one of those crab boats you see on television, like The Deadliest Catch.”
Interview With Mr. Randazzo
What was your favorite subject as a student? “Science. I had really great science teachers who made learning fun by incorporating lab experiments and other hands-on activities.” What are your favorite hobbies? “Fishing, and spending time with my wife and kids.” What advice would you give the 8th graders who will be graduating? “The advice that I’d give the 8th graders is to work hard and persevere through challenging situations. Also, carve out time for both your school work and social life. Lastly, from the words of William Arthur Ward, If you can imagine it, you can achieve it. If you can dream it, you can become it.” What is the last book you read? “I recently read a great book called THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENNRIETA Rebecca Skloot. It was so good, I couldn’t put it down.” Where did you grow up?
“I grew up in Glendale, Queens.”

I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone, especially kids in 6-8th grade. I’d tell you more about the book, but instead I’ll go finish The Scorch Trials. “A Trip to the Bahamas” by Allyson Baetiong, Grade 5 It was a dark and stormy night. You could hear the thunder roaring through the air, it’s presence threatening the sky. Carla and her father, Jason, were on an airplane, heading to the Bahamas for Carla’s 11 th birthday. It was their spring break vacation from work and from school. “Why is the plane shaking?” asked Carla, as she began to feel her own nerves shaking as well. “It’s probably nothing to worry about, just a little turbulence from the strong rain.” Replied Jason. “It’s kind of scary!” Stammered Carla. A few minutes later, the plane began to shake more and more. Jason decided to use the restroom before the pilot signaled the “fasten your seatbelt” sign. Carla’s hands were shaking uncontrollably as she struggled to put her own seatbelt on as tight as she could. Just as she managed to fasten its clasp, the plane began tilting to the left, then to the right. It was flying above the Atlantic Ocean when Carla watched a strike of lightning hit the wing of the plane. A moment later, she listened as the pilot announced that everyone needed to put on their life vests. Carla placed her life vest on and looked out her window. As she gazed off into the darkness, she began to worry about her father, why hasn’t he returned from the bathroom? But, before she had enough time to panic, she smelt something burning and then the lights went out. Carla must’ve been knocked out unconscious because when she woke up she felt the chill of water. She was in the Atlantic Ocean all alone. Carla immediately began swimming, trying frantically to find her dad. After about fifteen minutes the exhaustion kicked in, and Carla let out one more shout, “DAD!!!” Then she saw him swimming towards her, with the strap of his life vest dangling behind him. “Are you okay Carla?” Jason questioned as he swam towards her. “Yeah,” replied Carla, “but we need to get out of here!” So they swam across the water, struggling through its icy chill. When they reached the shore of a desolate island, they were grateful for the warmth of the sun. Regardless of how much they wanted to simply rest, they knew they had to come up with a plan to survive. “First, we need to build a shelter where we can sleep. I’ll build that while you try to find some food.” Commanded Jason. Carla immediately got to work. She came back with two coconuts and some berries. Meanwhile, Jason built a fort made out of leaves and pieces of wood. “Wow!” Gasped Carla. “How did you make that?” Jason, ignoring his daughter’s question, stated, “I’m impressed with the food that you seemed to have gathered Carla. After we eat, we have to build something we can ride on, like a small craft, to get us out of here.” Carla replied, “I’ll start finding some logs for the base of the boat.” After a few days of working, the father-daughter duo managed to gather enough logs and twigs to make a small boat. Their exhaustion was kicking in, but they knew that this was their only change for survival. “Let’s ride!” Jason demanded excitedly, “Do we need anything else?” Carla put a few coconuts into the boat and stated, “Nope, we’re ready.” They each grabbed a paddle and began to embark on their next adventure.
