Head Coach Cyrus Jones Coach Cyrus D. Jones has been the track and field coach at Lincoln University for 36 years. He is one of the most respected and successful track and field coaches in NCAA history, regardless of Division. Jones has guided Lincoln University to 17 national championships (men & women) since 1985. The women have won four national titles (three outdoor & one indoor). Meanwhile, the men have dominated the Division III landscape by winning 13 national titles (seven outdoor & six indoor) Jones’ teams have consistently been among the Division III elite. Since the NCAA has conducted championships in 1974, the Lincoln men have finished in the top five during the outdoor championships an astounding 22 times. The Lincoln men also have 11 outdoor runner-up finishes to its credit. Also serving as the Lincoln associate athletics director, Jones was named Mid East Region Track Coach of the Year prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet (2007), Mid East Region Track Coach of the Year prior to the NCAA Indoor Championship meet (2006). In addition, Jones has been named Division III National Coach of the Year six times (1985, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000). He also served as honorary official during the 2002 Penn Relays and was recently selected as one of the top 100 sports figures in the Philadelphia region of the past 100 years by the Philadelphia Tribune. Under Jones, Lincoln has produced over 300 AllAmerican Athletes. In addition, Jones has also served as the president of Division III Track and Field coaches association (1991-94). Jones, A 1968 graduate of Florida A & M University, is a tenured professor of Health and Physical Education at Lincoln University. Among some of the top athletes to run for Cyrus Jones are 800-meter runner Clive Terrelonge, who was inducted into the Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame. Terrelonge holds the Division III record in the 800-meter run (1:47.56) at the 1991 outdoor championships. Terrelonge currently is the assistant track coach for the University of Connecticut. The seven men’s outdoor titles are second in Division III behind Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Jones guided Lincoln to 22 consecutive top-five national finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field national championship meet between 1985 and 2006.

LU Track prepped for Penn Relays The historic Penn Relays represent Lincoln’s opportunity to Like Freeman, he runs a leg on showcase in front of not only a local audience but an inter- the 4x400 team. Long regarded as national one as well. one of Lincoln’s strongest events,
The 2010 Penn Relays highlights the schedule for Lincoln University’s track and field teams. With the university still transitioning to Division II, the 17-time national champions regard this event, held in the school’s backyard at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus, as the banner weekend. So with the top professional, college and high school athletes flocking to the historic venue for the much-anticipated weekend, held April 22-24, Lincoln is prepared to do whatever it takes to succeed. The season has already been a record-setting one regardless of how this weekend unfolds. After smashing the indoor school record in the 800 meters, Bienna Freeman broke Lincoln’s oldest mark, a 2:12.67 set by Narissa Crosson in 1992, with a 2:11.19 at the season-opening Reebok Raleigh Relays in March. She then broke the record again with a 2:10.39 at the Morgan State Invitational. The freshman also anchors the 4x400-meter relay team, which had a season-best 3:52.01, also coming at the Raleigh Relays. Clearly Lincoln’s most prized newcomer on the women’s side, she is rivaled only by her counterpart on the men’s side, redshirt freshman Matthew Coston. At the Raleigh Relays, he clocked his best time, a 1:50.18
the team of Coston, Deidre Mcleod, Alex Wright and Kester Lewis ran a 3:14.88 in Raleigh. Head Coach Cyrus Jones, in his 36th year at Lincoln, is most excited about the 1,600-sprint medley. With Coston also running the 800 leg, he feels this is the best cast he’s had in years. The group, consisting of Freeman Coston, Andre Wilkinson, Mcleod and Lewis, ran a 3:28.5, also at the Raleigh Relays. After battling leg injuries much of the season, senior Jared Randle appears to be healthy. He leapt 25 feet, four inches off the school mark, at the Morgan State Invitational April 9. At Morgan State, both the men and women placed seventh against top-quality competition boasting faces that the Lions will see once more this weekend. While Freeman broke a school record and Randle established a meet record, there were other notable performances. Fatima Ross offered a personal best 12.67 in the 100meter dash. She will be relied on in most sprints and relay teams. Morgan heath, a freshman excited to compete in her hometown, has been steady in the high jump. Her 1.59 meters at the Penn Invitational, also at Franklin Field, was her top mark in her young career. Consistency has been her best attribute. Following the Penn Relays, Lincoln travels to Coppin State next Thursday and concludes the season May 1 at the Delaware State Invitational.
