City of Eureka
In recognition of
Literacy Day August 19, 2017 Whereas,
reading stimulates intellectual development, provides stories and ideas that increase understanding of oneself and others, and sets children and adults on pathways to success ; and
Whereas,
a democratic society, a thriving economy, and a close-knit community all depend on literate, educated, and thoughtful citizens; and
Whereas,
access to books is more important than ever before in today’s digital device driven culture ; and
Whereas,
the City of Eureka honors the work of The Humboldt County Library, Eureka City Schools, First 5 Humboldt, The Humboldt Literacy Project, Booklegger and Eureka Books, all agencies which provide residents and visitors with valuable literacy and educational programs and services for youth, families, and adults; and
Whereas,
Eureka Parks & Recreation and Development Services Departments have teamed up to transform a phone booth in Henderson Center into a new mini-lending library; and
Whereas,
the Community Access Project for Eureka is launching its “Accessible Books from CAPE” traveling library that will bring the library experience directly to populations who don’t have access to traditional library’s; and
Whereas,
both of the aforementioned items will be unveiled on August 19th ; and
Whereas,
to celebrate the unveiling of the new projects, the Humboldt County Library, Eureka Books and Booklegger will provide family-friendly activities on Literacy Day.
Now, therefore, I Mayor Frank Jäger, on behalf of the Eureka City Council, hereby
proclaim
August 19th, 2017 as Literacy Day in Eureka and encourage all residents of Eureka to participate.
