Quotes From Steven Charleston, a Native American Episcopal Bishop

You are an example to someone else. So am I. So are we all. Even if we are not aware of it, even if we do not mean to be, we are the model of behavior that someone will follow. It may be a young person, but not necessarily. As human beings we constantly observe those around us and even unconsciously emulate those whom we admire. We are role models being copied, for good or bad. We create the community in which we live by every choice we make. As others follow in our footsteps, may God help us to be for them what we hope they will be for us.

I have a new description for some of us: a spiritual pragmatist. We are definitely not pessimists because we do not always expect something bad to happen, having seen the good emerge where and when least expected. But we are not strictly optimists, because we know that we are up against some long odds and don't always win. But we never lose faith. And we never give up hope. So we put some sweat equity into what we believe. We work at creating justice. We try again. We keep going. So, we are spiritual pragmatists, blue collar believers, busy building a dream.

Let me share a quiet word with you. It is nothing profound, but something as simple as it is sincere. My word is, yes. Yes, you have been a great help to many others, even when you were not aware of it. Yes, your courage in carrying the burdens you have kept hope alive when it was most needed. Yes, what you have seen in your spirit are visions from a sacred source. Yes, your life has mattered and it has meaning infinite and ongoing. Yes, you will be remembered and cherished for as long as the stars shine. That is my quiet word. I hope you hear it as it speaks to you from the heart.
