What does this career look like?
HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary degree in electrical, electronics or instrumentation and controls engineering is typically required. • To obtain a license as a professional engineer (P. Eng), you must obtain a degree from an accredited engineering program, pass a professional practice exam and have three to four years of engineering experience. • Unlicensed engineers must work under the supervision of a P. Eng.
You combine the principles of automated systems with precise measurements to design and construct better instruments, valves and controls. Your main objective is to make sure that the automated systems and processes used in oil and gas facilities and operations are efficient, easy to use, and safe. You’ll apply hours of research on current and emerging technologies to improve your systems. You see an update to be made and you are involved from design to prototype to testing. You’ll often work with a team to identify problem areas and then you’ll draw schematics of solutions. You’ll use cutting edge software programs to develop prototypes for testing. Once tests are passed you might develop a formal technical document to be approved by a company manager.

What would I do? You are precise. You manage and calibrate electrical circuits and ensure proper measurements. Daily tasks range widely, but might include: 4 Conferring with engineers and clients to discuss existing or potential engineering projects or products 4 Inspecting the installation, modification, testing and operation of electrical and electronic systems and equipment 4 Performing detailed calculations to compute and establish manufacturing, construction or installation standards and specifications 4 Designing, implementing, maintaining and improving electrical instruments, equipment, facilities, components, products and systems
