HOW DO I GET HERE?
Critical issues regarding sanitation, filtration systems, climate change, wastewater and land use are always being discussed and resolved in the oil and gas industry. How can we recycle more water, reduce air emissions or reclaim a tailings pond? If you are a big thinker and you want to be a part of the solution, Environmental Engineering may be the career for you.
A post-secondary degree in environmental engineering is typically required, but related disciplines such as agrology, biology an chemistry can lead to this profession. In some roles, a graduate degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred.
What does this career look like?
• To obtain a license as a professional engineer (P. Eng), you must pass a professional practice exam and have three to four years of engineering experience.
You bring together scientific knowledge with design to find ways to reduce environmental impacts. Your ideas push the environmental envelope while still being technically and economically feasible. The possibilities are endless. On any day, you’ll work closely with a broad group of experts, regulators and specialists to reach a common goal. Together you improve efficiencies, meet or exceed regulations and improve environmental performance for the industry.

You ask questions and identify environmental concerns. You are a planner. You may look at future project proposals and advise on environmental effects. You collect data, do research and write environmental investigation reports or feasibility studies. You may apply for permits and incorporate provincial and federal regulations into project planning. You are a problem solver. You find ways to improve environmental performance. Depending on your area of specialty, you may coordinate waste management and recycling activities at operation and production sites or, monitor emissions and inspect operations. You may look for ways to conserve energy and water or ensure any waste is treated and disposed of to meet environmental and health regulations. You often ensure that all of a company’s projects, including building and development projects, are meeting or exceeding regulations. You work on the inside of the industry to find new ways to responsibly meet energy needs.
