MACHINIST

#GearMachinist #JourneymanMachinist #MaintenanceSpecialist #ProductionMachinist Machinists are artists, turning drawings into three dimensional metal objects. You create precise tools, replacement parts and one-of-a-kind prototypes out of metal. The oil and gas industry has custom equipment, new technologies and automations that often require your expertise. Do you like creating things with your hands? Are you a master of accuracy? Do you want to work with powerful machines? A career as a machinist may be a precise fit for you.

What does this career look like?

HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma (or equivalent) is typically required, along with a four-year apprenticeship program or several years of experience working in the trade along with some industry approved college courses. • Trade certification is available in all provinces and territories • Red Seal endorsement is also available to qualified Machinists upon successful completion of the interprovincial Red Seal examination

You bring ideas to life. You are a skilled craftsman who can set up and operate a variety of manual or computer-controlled machine tools to produce precise objects. You find ways to cut metal into tools for construction, hydraulic parts for operations or replicated gears for maintenance and repairs. You have laser sharp precision in your work. Measurements, calculations and cuttings must be precise. You make items exact to 1/40th of a millimetre, so accuracy is key.

What would I do? As a machinist, you are provided with design blueprints or specifications. You calculate measurements, select tools and set up or program the machines. You may need to use a variety of manual tools like boring machines, radial drills and lathes or computer numeric control (CNC) machines to make the right cuts. You choose the correct materials and metals, mark where the cuts should be, and determine what order the cuts need to be made. After all this careful planning and consideration, you begin to create.

HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • H2S Alive (depending on work facility) • Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) • Asbestos Safety • Confined Space Entry • Aerial Lift Training • Respirator Fit Training

HOW CAN I WORK IN LNG?

Your machines cut, punch and grind away everything not needed in the design using lasers, water jets or other processes. You constantly monitor the speed of the machine and the temperatures, lubrication, and cooling processes for the remaining metal. You detect problems by listening for specific sounds—for example, that of a dull cutting tool or excessive vibration—and fix problems as they arise.

As Canada prepares for the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, this occupation will play a key role in:

Finally, once it is complete you double and triple check accuracy of your work against the blueprints. Once you are sure it is correct, you smooth the product. You have turned a drawing into a useable object.

• LNG export facility operations • LNG export facility construction • Natural gas pipeline construction
