You develop the company’s purchasing policies. You love when your strategies for sourcing and negotiating new supplier relationships result in the advancement of your company and its profitability. In the oil and gas industry, Purchasing Managers deal with budgets in the millions or even billions of dollars.

What does this career look like? You’re the shrewd shopper of the oil and gas industry. As Purchasing Manager you plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of a purchasing department including developing and implementing the company’s purchasing policies. This involves examining the existing procedures and identifying opportunities to streamline purchasing activities. Whether you’re spending millions of dollars on one-off capital projects, like building a new facility, drilling a new well or focusing on long-term contracts for operations or maintenance, your success will often be measured on cost savings or cost avoidance. You make sure your team is armed with the latest market intelligence so you can negotiate with suppliers.

What would I do? Oil and gas companies spend their money in a number of areas. As Purchasing Manager, you often handle: 4 Procurement - the daily purchasing of goods and services and working with Accounts Payable to ensure processes and systems are seamless 4 Contracts - negotiating them with the proper terms and conditions 4 Warehousing and logistics - directing the movement and storage of inventory in a way that limits the costs 4 Sourcing - putting together Requests for Proposals that also comply with corporate health and safety and social responsibility policies Your day may include: 4 Selecting transportation routes to maximize efforts by combining shipments or consolidating warehousing and distribution 4 Analyzing your company’s inventory to determine how to increase inventory turns, reduce waste or optimize your customer service 4 Risk management regarding supply contracts and agreements 4 Monitoring forecasts and quotas to identify changes or to determine their effect on supply chain activities

HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary degree in business administration, commerce or economics is typically required, along with several years of experience as a Purchasing Agent or Officer. • The designation Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) or registration in the educational program of Purchasing Management Association of Canada may be required.

HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING Health and Safety courses would depend on the role, but the following often apply. • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) • Pipeline Construction Safety Training (PCST)

HOW CAN I WORK IN LNG? As Canada prepares for the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, this occupation will play a key role in: • Off-site fabrication • LNG export facility construction • LNG export facility operations • Natural gas pipeline construction • Turnaround maintenance When LNG takes off, you can be a part of the action!
