Personnel and goods in the oil and gas industry are continuously in motion. Whether a company’s product is oil or gas, or oil and gas equipment, they need a Logistics Manager.
What does this career look like? You use your strong organization and multitasking skills to manage logistics personnel, logistics systems and daily operations. This means planning, directing, or coordinating with purchasing, warehousing, distribution, forecasting, customer service, or planning services. It begins with strong supplier negotiations in order to arrive at the best logistics solutions for your company. That means balancing cost, quality, delivery timelines and safety. In order to do that, you maintain relationships with suppliers and customers, while keeping your finger on the pulse of market conditions and material costs. You solve problems and you analyze logistics scenarios including the financial impact of various approaches such as routing, shipping modes, product volumes or mixes or carriers. You might truck it, barge it, fly it or rail it – regardless which way, you need to weigh the pros and cons of each choice.

What would I do? Beyond negotiating the best logistics approaches for your company, you’re also ensuring there is regulatory, legal and carrier compliance for transit and delivery. You monitor import and export processes and laws and ensure that all contractors and providers have good safety records and all the required permits and licenses. You may also work with procurement in the development of RFPs (Requests for Proposal) and the bidding process. On any given day, you might:
4 Monitor product import or export processes to ensure compliance with regulatory or legal requirements 4 Ensure carrier compliance with company policies or procedures for product transit or delivery 4 Negotiate transportation rates or services 4 Collaborate with other departments to integrate logistics with business systems or processes, such as customer sales, order management, accounting or shipping of inbound/outbound supplies
HOW DO I GET HERE? A post-secondary degree in business administration, commerce or economics is typically required, along with several years of experience in Supply Chain Logistics or Distribution. • The designation Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) or registration in the educational program of Purchasing Management Association of Canada may be required. • A Certified Supply Chain Professional designation (CSCP) is also widely recognized.
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING Health and Safety courses would depend on the role, but the following often apply. • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) • Pipeline Construction Safety Training (PCST) • H2S Alive
HOW CAN I WORK IN LNG? As Canada prepares for the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, this occupation will play a key role in: • LNG export facility construction • LNG export facility operations • Natural gas pipeline construction When LNG takes off, you can be a part of the action!
