Wabash Falls In Tight Battle Versus Wittenberg

Wabash took a 14-13 lead over Wittenberg with 4:18 remaining in the third period but eventually lost 21-13. The Little Giants were unable to convert a third-and-one-yard play near midfield in the fourth quarter to maintain a drive to try and move in front of the Tigers by two scores. Wittenberg rallied with a seven-play drive capped by a 24-yard touchdown pass to go on to the victory. Matt Penola led the Little Giants in rushing with 48 yards, all coming on a fourth-down fake punt run down the left sideline that extended the Wabash drive that ended with an Ike James (SO/RB/Lowell, IN/Lowell) three-yard touchdown run. Weston Murphy (SO/QB/Gilbert, AZ/Williams Field) completed 15-of-30 pass attempts for 156 yards and one touchdown throw to Ra'shawn Jones (SO/WR/Indianapolis, IN/Lawrence Central) for his first collegiate scoring reception. Kirby Cox (SR/WR/Indianapolis, IN/Scecina Memorial) caught a career-high five passes for 60 yards. Evan Hansen (JR/ LB/Carmel, IN/Guerin Catholic) led the defense for the third consecutive game with eight tackles. Brock Heffron (JR/LB/Chandler, AZ/Perry) made his second interception of the season, while Isaiah Campbell (FR/LB/ Indianapolis, IN/Ben Davis) recorded his first career interception.

Allegheny College Quick Facts

Coach Morel’s Comments

“This is absolutely a great group of fighters. They will fight to the very end, to the last play. As I've said all season, effort has never been an issue for this squad. There are just things we cannot do. We can't commit turnovers, especially in the first half of a football game. We are a good defensive team. We lead the conference in defense. We can play with anybody. We can win our last two games. We're taking it one game at a time. Saturday's game against Allegheny is a big football game." On coaching against BJ Hammer: "Once the game gets going you forget who is on the other side. Both Coach Hammer and myself, as the years pass from his days at Wabash, we evolve as coaches. We're both doing new things on offense and defense. BJ and I had fun when we were together at Wabash. Our groups went against each other in fall practices and in spring football. We would share ideas in the office. He always wants to hit the quarterback, so you better protect your quarterback if you're going to play a Coach Hammerled team.

On Allegheny: “We have to try and contain Alex Victor. That guy scores against everyone. They put him in a different position. They give him a different motion to try and cut him loose. I think he's the fastest kid in the conference. We also have to put some pressure on their quarterback, Logan Lee and get after him early. Our offensive line needs to play well in pass protection. We did struggle a little bit against Wittenberg. We've worked hard this week to shore that up. Colten Buzard is an explosive guy on defense and can disrupt the game."

Little Giants Head To OWU For NCAC Men's Soccer Tournament

Wabash picked up a pair of victories last week to finish the regular season with a record of 11-5-1 and a 5-3-1 mark in North Coast Athletic Conference play to earn the number-three seed in the upcoming NCAC Men's Soccer Tournament. Wabash will travel to second-seed Ohio Wesleyan Wednesday, November 1 for a 7 p.m. contest. The Little Giants won 2-1 at DePauw last Wednesday to secure a berth in the conference tournament. Cory Sims (SR/MF/Camby, IN/Mooresville) scored the game-winning goal and added an assist on the first goal to lift Wabash to its first win against the Tigers in Greencastle since 1999. Chad Wunderlich (FR/GK/St. Louis, MO/John Burroughs School) made two saves to record his fifth win and third shutout of the season. Wabash will compete in the NCAC Tournament for the third time in four seasons. The winner of Wednesday's match will face the winner of the Denison-at-Kenyon contest. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday, November 4 with a time and location to be announced Wednesday evening. Wabash and OWU meet for the first time in tournament action. The Battling Bishops defeated Wabash in Crawfordsville 4-0 earlier this season.
