EDITORIAL

PERSEVERANCE IS HARD. No matter your goal, no matter how desperate your desire, the work required always seems as unwieldy as the globe on Atlas’s shoulders. Yet, while we praise Atlas for his forbearance, we often fail to follow his lead. We claim we’re not to blame; society has trained us to drop the ball. Why stand with the world on your shoulders when you can sit down? Why cook when prepackaged kernels can be popped in 2.5 minutes? Why snail-mail when you can email, Facebook or Instagram? Of course, the desire for instant gratification isn’t unique to today’s culture. There have always been people who, discontent with their homes, would simply move. Fortunately, Windham Henry Quin wasn’t one of them. When his gout worsened in the 1830s, he decided neither to feel sorry for himself nor to languish away, bored in and peeved with a house he didn’t particularly like. He wouldn’t be an invalid but a builder, and he would spend the rest of his days chasing his dream and constructing Adare Manor (page 62). Our world needs more people like Quin—and like you, our readers: people willing to stand when everyone else sits. People like you, who have restored historic homes to their Gilded Age glory and revitalized rundown districts across America. People like those of you who have been reading Victorian Homes for three decades have posed countless home-restoration questions to our staff and requested more pages, rightly pointing out that a slim volume can’t do it all. I’m pleased to say that your persistence has paid off. With this special 100-page issue, your requests for more Gilded Age and Gothic Revival homes (pages 50, 62, 68, 80), antiques and collectibles (16, 40, 79), Steampunk innovations (20) and vintage style tips (24, 30, 40) have been granted—our gift to you. Whether you’re new to Victorian art and architecture or you’re convinced the 19th-century is your true home, we hope you’ll find the inspiration you need to persevere in your preservation endeavors. Cheers,

Elaine K. Phillips
