Lutheran Campus Ministries in Atlanta

Lutheran Campus Ministries in Atlanta Wow, what a year it has been at Lutheran Campus Ministries in Atlanta! We continue to gather each Tuesday during the school year at 6:03 PM for dinner and worship. The meals are graciously provided by individuals and congregations around Atlanta, making it possible for than 25 students to gather on the Daly Deck each week for food and fellowship, Word and Sacrament. And that is just the beginning. Grace House is uniquely positioned right in the middle of fraternity and sorority row on the Georgia Tech campus, so our house is regularly buzzing with students looking for a home away from home or just a (reasonably) quite place to study. This year we also offered a Wednesday night Bible study and a Lenten Book Study. We did evening prayer together and hosted an ecumenical Maundy service. We went away on a Discernment Retreat, and of course, we played together, including an Escape the Room event, game nights, movie nights, and a recurring Ladies Breakfast. Grace House is blessed to have four Passion Collective Missioners each year who live at the house rent-free in a gap year in Christian community in exchange for sharing their many gifts with us ten hours per week in campus ministry. All this is happening while we continue to build our partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Kathryn Folk works with us part-time on behalf of the Diocese, reaching out to Episcopal students and making deeper connections on campus. But our biggest success this year is Grace Coffee House. Thanks to barista Emily Porter, we are pleased to give away fancy espresso drinks and lattes every to more than 150 students and faculty each Thursday! What congregation wouldn’t be ecstatic to have this many visitors week in and week out? Some come just for free coffee; other stay to chat and hang out with us, and still others come back and join us on Tuesday nights. It is wonderful outreach, allowing us to meet dozens of international students. All this is to say that YOUR campus ministry in Atlanta is thriving! The four part-time staff at Grace House are having a ball, and congregations are noticing. Pastor Devin Strong and pastor-in-waiting Chris Smith visited 14 different Lutheran congregations in 2016 to share the wonderful story of students’ lives being changed. If yours was not yet one of them, please come by our table at this Synod Assembly and chat with us. You can schedule a congregational visit, sign up to donate a Tuesday dinner or sponsor a week of Grace Coffee House. You can also pick up some free campus ministry gifts, and most importantly, please enjoy a delicious, home-made cookie on us! We are most grateful for your generosity and the fantastic support of the whole Southeastern Synod!
