Spring Newsletter

2014

From the President What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, UW Lutheran/Episcopal Campus Ministry was cruising along with the two denominations considering partnering in ownership of the ministry site (Covenant House), as well as the work of the ministry itself. Since that time a number of changes have occurred, leaving UW Lutheran Campus Ministry with new challenges and opportunities: • New leadership led to new directions for Episcopal Campus Ministry. In the spring, they decided to leave Covenant House and strike out on their own. We wished them well in their new endeavor and turned our attention to exploring how our own ministry might continue as we went solo for the first time in many years. • Over the summer, Pastor Scott received and accepted a call to Advent Lutheran Church in Mill Creek. We hosted a farewell event to celebrate his 16 years of ministry with us and to wish him well as he made the shift from campus to parish ministry. • With Scott’s departure the ministry entered a period of pastoral transition. The board met with Bishop Unti and Regional Coordinator Nelson to explore our options. We chose to request a short term, interim pastor while the board took the time to re-envision what the ministry might look like going forward. • Pastor Elizabeth Rawlings joined us in September as a mission developer/interim pastor. Her mandate from the board was to keep the ministry going, explore new possibilities, and forge relationships in the community, while the board did the transition work of developing a site profile and vision for the future.

From the President (cont.) And that’s where we are today. First quarter was a pretty steep learning curve for all involved, but we are looking forward to new and exciting things in the upcoming quarters. Despite all of the changes, our ministry remains the same. We are a ministry by Lutherans to the University of Washington community, focusing on young adults during a significant time of life transition. Our ministry of presence to the campus provides a safe and inviting place for students at Covenant House. We are also proud to partner with the Ministry to Chinese Students and Scholars, which provides a venue for scholars and students from China to get together to learn about the Christian faith, learn English, and enjoy fellowship together. If you would like to be part of this exciting time in our ministry, consider one of the following opportunities: • Board Membership – Leadership during a time of transition is inspiring. If you have a passion for campus ministry and are willing to give of your time and talent, please consider applying for a position on our board. • Transition Team and Vision Focus Groups – We hope to spend most of Spring Quarter focusing on meeting with and talking to our constituency to explore what our vision is for this ministry. If you are interested in participating in this process, please let us know.

Blessings,

Kay Edgerton, Board President Lutheran Campus Ministry @ The University of Washington

Student Spotlight – Peer minister Jeff Alcock My name is Jeff Alcock and I am a junior at UW studying electrical engineering. I have been attending Lutheran Campus Ministry for all three years I have been on campus and can vouch for what a valuable resource it is in a number of ways. First and foremost, I have appreciated having a smaller peer group; a place where everyone knows your name. The community has always been very warm and welcoming. Events ranging from game nights to hiking trips help strengthen this community and provide relief from our busy academic schedules. Second, the use of the facility has been important to me. I live off campus now, so having a location close to campus where I can warm up with some coffee, take a study break, or even nap has been useful. Finally and most importantly, LCM has given me a good way to continue to express and develop my faith. It has been the perfect blend of familiar service styles I grew up with and new faith questions to explore and share with others Lutheran Campus Ministry has changed a lot over the past year while staying true to its most redeeming qualities. A large portion of our regular members graduated last spring, but I see this as an opportunity for growth and change in the ministry. I look forward to spending my last year at UW with this group and watching as the program develops further and continues to help students in their faith.

Elizabeth’s Epistle Beginning a new job is always difficult; jumping into a new call (and a first call) 2 weeks before the school year starts while following a pastor who has been in place 18 years is more so. After a bit of a bumpy start, we are in the groove and ready to grow. There are few things in life more rewarding than walking with young people on their journey. The whole world is still open to them, and, for the most part, life is more exciting than it is scary. Questions are meant to be asked, boxes meant to be jumped out of, molds made to be broken. We are doing some really exciting things and have some great plans for the future. Winter quarter we began a weekly Theology Café, a time for  students to bring their questions about life in the spirit to Covenant  House for discussion over coffee and treats. We also added movie nights and game nights, and spring quarter we will have a crafting day where we will do activities ranging from art to canning. In preparation for next academic year, we are connecting with congregations and youth groups to remind those who work with youth to let us know who is coming to UW in hopes to connect with more students, and we are hosting a campus ministry preview night for high school students May 30. If you know a student coming to UW next year (or who is already here), please go to our website www.uwlutherans.org, click on the connect tab and provide us with contact information for the student. We contact incoming students every summer with letters of support and an invitation to join in our community. We need your help to grow our ministry! There’s a lot going on at Covenant House and we are looking towards a bright, engaged, faithful future! Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Pastor Elizabeth

Did youknow? • While many of our student participants come from all over the world, most of them come from congregations in our own backyard, particularly from the three Washington Synods. • Many former students return in the form of active volunteers. • Lutheran Campus Ministry is a ministry by the ELCA to all students, not just a ministry to Lutheran students on campus. • In an effort to further express our welcome to all students as God’s beloved children, the board has voted in favor of Lutheran Campus Ministry at UW becoming a Reconciling in Christ Ministry. • Our peer ministers and pastor have been trained by the UW Q Center, making us a designated safe space for LGBTQ students on the UW campus.

Financial Update Thanks to the generous contributions of the national church, Region 1, synodical support in Washington and Oregon and individuals like you, we had an excellent financial year. Our projected budget for 2013 -2014 was $299,231, not including our annual lump payment towards the purchase of Covenant house, $87,096, bringing our annual budget for this past fiscal year to $386,326. We received $34,078 in support from Region 1 and our partner synods, $35,649 from ELCA congregations, $50,377 from individual donors and $2,801 from Thrivent special gifts. Ensuring we have a permanent home at Covenant House In 2011, Lutheran Campus Ministry made the decision to buy Covenant House from the church bodies that were once partners in Campus Christian Ministry. Covenant House provides a sense of place for the students, a respite from the loudness and chaos of dorm, apartment and Greek life, as well as space for worship and fun throughout the year. It is of great importance to both students and alumni that we keep Covenant House. This year, we received a $200,000 through National Lutheran Campus Ministry, Inc.. (NLCM, Inc) and have approached other groups to help us pay down our $609,000 debt on Covenant house, which we pay in annual payments of $87,096. While this assistance from NLCM, Inc has taken off some of the pressure we feel to buy the building, there is still a sense of urgency for us to get this wonderful property purchased, ensuring Lutheran Campus Ministry at University of Washington has a home for years to come. Into the future Our budget for the 2014-2015 FY is $169,350 – that is the total cost for our ministry including our building payments. As you can se, while a majority of our support comes from We are so thankful for your continued support as we move into a future with a growing program, a home that is all ours, one foot on campus and one foot in the world.
