20+ Miles of Sweetwater River LOCATION: The summer range is about 40 miles southwest of Lander, just east of the continental divide. The Sweetwater River forms the 20+ mile west boundary. HUNTING: Two owner elk tags are granted. Antelope are prolific, and mule deer are rebuilding. By controlling predators, and managing the grass, wildlife has flourished this past century. The antelope are regarded by Wyoming State as one of the most prolific herds in the state. Elk prefer the regrowth after the cattle clip the coarse, first clip of grass. Large bull elk are harvested. 12

Silencer Hydraulic Cattle Squeeze Chute, Alley, & Tub by Calf Feedlot Lyons Valley Ranch runs 400+ mother cows plus replacement heifers. Calving is the end of January and February, and calves are weaned the end of October at 600 lbs. The steer calves are back grounded until the end of November. All the heifer calves are fed in the feedlot until spring.

Ranch Raised Bull Calves A quality herd of registered Angus cows are bred AI and maintained. Bull calves are kept and used in the commercial herd. Cattle are trucked about 40 miles to the summer range June 1. By October 26, the cattle are gathered into the 900+ acres of fenced, deeded land. A very large working corral serves to wean the calves and PG the cows. Cows are usually 96-97% bred. The 100 acres irrigated from Pine Creek help sustain the cows for a couple weeks before they are then trucked to the headquarters.

Water for the center pivot is drawn from a short canal leading from the river. The river provides cheap, dependable water for irrigation. Nesting and winter cover for pheasants has successfully populated the ranch.

Campsite among the Aspens Possibly the most enjoyable of any of the ranch improvements, is a simple campfire, beneath the bright starlight of the clear, high altitude night sky. AREA ATTRACTIONS: The historic Oregon Trail runs along Highway 28 by the summer range. The Oregon Buttes, just south of the highway, were a major landmark for the splitting of the Oregon Trail.

Lander Cut-Off on the Oregon Trail

17

Half way between the summer range and the headquarters, is the Red Canyon. Elk winter in the Red Canyon. The Owl Mountains are on the distant horizon. Red Canyon Lander, Wyoming (pop. 7,000+/-) was the western terminal of the Chicago and North Western Railway. The railroad was to extend to Coos Bay, Oregon or Eureka, California, but the slogan “where the rails end and the trails began” resulted. Lander is home to an internationally known bronze foundry, the Eagle Bronze.

An Eagle Bronze Rock climbers internationally have a high regard for the granite peaks of the Wind River Mountains. A Fair Fight? Lander currently has three elementary schools, a junior high school, and a new high school. Lander is transitioning into two new elementary schools (K-3, and 4 & 5), middle (6-8), and the new high school (9-12). There are 20 churches (of various faiths), and the four-year Wyoming Catholic College. MINERALS: All minerals owned by the Seller transfer to the Buyer. The Seller may own 1/4-1/2 the minerals. COMMENTS: The recreational splendor of this great, meticulously managed, working ranch, dwarfs many promoted fishing and hunting "properties"; 20+ miles of the Sweetwater River plus miles of the East Sweetwater, Little Sweetwater, Gold, Jack, Mill, and Fish Creeks, 11 1/2 miles of Bridger and Shoshone FS boundary, and the historic Oregon Trail with old sheepherder camps, cabins, and corrals. Lyons Valley Ranch has the authenticity and flavor of western working cattle ranches; tough horses, tougher cowboys, clear trout streams, elusive elk and deer, distant mountain horizons, therapeutic silence.
