FROM THE PASTOR

Dear church friends, PROPHESY OVER YOUR MINISTRY Let me tell you what the Lord has laid on my heart for the year 2019. I will not give in to negative thinking and speaking. I will remember what Coach Lombardi said, “The greatest accomplishment is not failing, but rising again after you fail.” I will speak. I will prophesy to my ministry and trust the Lord to help us develop new ministries, as we reach out to new people in 2019.

PRAY OVER YOUR MINISTRY Legendary Dallas coach Tom Landry said, “People striving, being knocked down and coming back, that is what builds character.” He was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. Pray for new leaders with Christian character that are committed to living a Christian life. Pray for eyes to see opportunities for new ministries all around us and try some new ministries in 2019.

PRACTICE YOUR MINISTRY Chuck Noll Pittsburg Steelers said, “The single most important thing we had in the Steelers was the ability to work together.” Let us practice doing ministry together in unity. We need to do ministry God’s way. In 2019, I am asking God to enable me to forget what is behind and put my energies in future ministries. Philippians 3:13, “God’s Grace is sufficient for you.” II Corinthians 12:19, “Grace is Greater.” Pastor Dennis

WELLNESS NEWS

Wellness Awareness by CHERYL HOWARD, parish nurse

“Sometimes the challenges and tasks that we face in the day to day can feel overwhelming and make our efforts seem in vain. Yet, it is through small actions of love and mercy, in concert with others, that help to shape the culture and change the dynamics of our life, ministries and communities”. – Archbishop Desmond Tutu

E-CIGARETTES

Did you know that e-cigarette use (“vaping”) has increased by a staggering 78 percent among high schoolers from 2017 to 2018? In the past year alone, more than one million kids began using e-cigarettes. This epidemic is setting the stage for another generation of Americans addicted to tobacco products and ultimately more tobacco-caused death and disease. The amount of nicotine in one JUUL cartridge is more than an entire pack of cigarettes, and many of the other e-cigarettes tested contain known carcinogens. What is the number one reason kids are attracted to e-cigarettes? The flavors. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, killing more than 480,000 Americans a year. (American Lung Association)

WINTER DOLDRUMS

When the temperatures drop and the daylight hours are shorter, energy levels can take a big dip, right along with mood. Kids might be less active in the cold, winter months, making it extra important to focus on adequate nutrition this time of year. And while it hasn’t been well-studied in children, kids could experience Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is a type of depression with a seasonal pattern, just like adults. Changes in mood, energy, focus, appetite and sleep are some common signs. These foods will help your kids stay healthy and happy this winter. Encourage eating clementine’s, winter squash, salmon, sweet potatoes and cauliflower for their health!!

DIET SODA

Drinking diet soda may increase the risk for diabetic retinopathy – a severe type of diabetic eye disease that can lead to blindness. “In our clinical sample of people with diabetes, consuming more than four cans, or 1.5 liters, of diet soft drinks per week was associated with a twofold increased risk of having diabetic retinopathy,” author Eva Fenwick, PhD, told Medscape Medical News. Interestingly, the study did not find a correlation between consumption of regular, sugar-sweetened soft drinks and increased risk for diabetic retinopathy.

ENERGY BOOSTERS

Four natural energy boosters: 1) Get more sleep!!! 2) Drink more WATER!!! 3) Reduce stress. Relax more!!! 4) Eat healthy foods – more vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains. These suggestions have long lasting benefits – think long term gains!!

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Treasurer’s Flash by BILL YEAGER

Hello church, I want to make you aware of the Qualified Charitable Deductions (QCD) in the tax law. If you have a required annual IRA deduction, then a QCD might be a tax benefit to you and the church. Just make the church aware of the purpose, say your pledge or mission, etc. and the funds wind up as you instructed. A QCD is not counted as income to you in the eyes of the IRS. Please check your tax guy; stipulations do apply. I went to my financial guy and set it up. It takes a little action from you, but for me the set-up was not bad. I went to Edward Jones-Scott Neal, (my guy), told him what I wanted, signed a form and left. Now a quarterly check to FUMC from my IRA to QCD just happens. It’s not in my income for tax purposes and FUMC has my tithe payment. By the way, the check arrived in the FUMC mailbox this week. Considering the new laws for deductions, this might be a benefit for you. It is for me. Enough for now, I’m Bill Yeager and this Treasurer’s Flash is – OFF THE TREASURER’S CHEST

The keynote speaker will be Joy Skjegstad, author, speaker and consultant on non-profit management and ministry development. Elimination

Presence and know Him better. Jesus calls us to let go of our comfortable sin and repent.

by CATHY MOSIER

March Madness is a single elimination tournament played each spring to determine the “best” sports team…along the way “lesser” teams are eliminated. Sooo, the question is…what will you eliminate this March that you may walk closer to Christ and continue to “keep Christmas well?”

Luke 5:36-39 …new life…new way…Jesus calls us to eliminate the “old way” of believing and embrace the “new life” with HIM! Luke 5:5 listen to Jesus’ authority…“But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Jesus calls us to eliminate doubt.

World Day of Prayer has two major themes that may help us eliminate things that would interfere with our walk: “Come – the Table is Ready” and “Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk.”

Luke 5:10 contains His promise that when we listen to HIM …“Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” Jesus calls us to eliminate fear. Luke 5:18-25…allow friends to carry you, when your faith falters, into the presence of Jesus who heals us from doubts and fears. Jesus calls us to eliminate self-reliance (pride).

Genesis 13:17 reminds us to “GO, walk through the length and breadth of the land I AM giving it to you! Are we ready to claim what GOD has prepared for us? John 14:1-5 reminds us ”My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” PRAISE GOD for this great good news! On February 1, my mother heard the invitation to “come” AND SHE WENT HOME to the place Jesus had prepared for her in His Daddy’s House!

I pray that during March Madness you may discover ways to “keep Christmas well” through out the whole year! Consider praying for those special needs listed on the March calendar on the next page. The ledger at the bottom explains each day.

Luke 5:27-31 …Follow me…Jesus calls us to eliminate our old sin-filled life and enter His

Prayers that we would REMEMBER to eliminate our negative “stinking” thinking and choose to encourage others.

Prayer for our schools – that each school may be a place of safety and learning, that the children may experience peace, that children may be well fed, that children may be warm, that children may be safe, that children may experience friendship, that teachers may feel appreciated, that administration may be positive thinking, that support staff may feel encouraged, that parents may feel they have necessary resources. Prayers for our police, fire, rescue, ambulance and EMT people to feel they are appreciated, that they are valued, that they are respected, that they may be encouraged. Prayers for our doctors, nurses, CNAs and support staff to feel they are appreciated, that they are valued, that they are respected, and that they may be encouraged. MISSIONS AND MINISTRIES

UMW Updates by CHERYLL HOWELL

W

here are we? It’s colder than Alaska. It’s as warm as Florida. What is going on here? We have to change wardrobes like in the spring and fall. It drives me crazy! One thing we can depend on is that it will be different tomorrow. Isn’t that just typical Indiana weather? Chin up! We can make it! Speaking of ‘making’ something…United Methodist Women will be making Easter eggs April 11 and 12. Be sure to look for our chocolate Easter egg sale April 14 between the Sunday morning services. There will be choices – you can depend on that. Don’t forget our rummage sale in early May!!! Don’t pack your car up yet. We will for sure let you know when to bring your items to the church. And don’t forget the children who have no food for the weekends. We all have to love one another and provide assistance when and where possible. Another month is gone. Guide us safely into the next.

Kick Off Your 2019 with a Mission Experience by DAVE NANCE

We are planning a spring trip to the mission. Henderson Settlement becomes fully open for mission volunteers in April. We are planning a trip to the mission the very first week. The focus will be on campus projects, greenhouse projects, athletic field spring preparation, light maintenance, and assistance to the community outreach program. We really can’t pick projects without you. We need to know who is going, with what skills, abilities, and desires. Last fall we spent one day in beautiful SE Kentucky, visited Red Bird Mission, and Pine Mountain State Park. We will be delivering some supplies to both missions for their community programs. There is a modest cost for individuals associated with room and board. Please contact Dave Nance at [email protected] for additional information. You can also just stop by the parlor on Sunday mornings between first and second service. Please don’t wait. We need to finalize plans for this trip very soon. This year there will be several opportunities to work with the Henderson Mission Team. The additional activities start in the summer with fellowship fundraising and will include a fall mission trip followed by the usual Christmas gifts. Please watch for the opportunity that is right for you. MOORESVILLE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
