The Intercom... Order of Daedalians

We are a fraternity that is founded on the common love of aviation and true service. Its a new year and we need to continue supporting “THE CENTURY CLUB” to make sure that we can award our scholarships!! In order to be a member you have to give $100 in scholarship by the end of the calendar year. Remember that the amount in “THE CENTURY CLUB 2013” box of the insert is if you plan to give with each intercom. If you haven’t been giving write a check for the “catch up” amount and you will be in the club!

The National Fraternity of Military Pilots 7th flight (Harald L. George) Los Angeles, California March 2013 - Vol 28: No. 2

The HZ-1 Aerocycle  - known as the ‘motorcylce of the air’ was one of several single person flying platforms that the U.S. Army looked into during the 1950s and 60s. The Aerocycle carried a single pilot and its engine on a circular platform, all of which was located just above two 15-foot long rotating propellers.  The craft’s pilot would stand toward the rear of the platform, secured by a tether attached to the steering column.

March 23, 2012 Program

Single person flying platforms were going to be used for reconnaissance missions. The belief was that they were easy to pilot so little experience was needed to operate one. They learned otherwise during the testing phase when two pilots crashed because the Aerocycle was ‘too hard to steer without experience’.

Mr. Chealander brings a wealth of both civilian and military aviation experience to our event. He was with American Airlines, serving since 1991 as a pilot and Captain and as a Chief Pilot in Los Angeles.

The Order of Daedalians, the National Fraternity of Military Pilots, was organized on 26 March 1934 by a group of World War I commissioned Army pilots to perpetuate the spirit of patriotism, love of country and ideals of self-sacrifice which place service to nation above personal safety or position. Membership is open to pilots (commissioned, warrant officers, USAAF flight officers, and WASPs) of all US armed services and who can be on active duty, retired or have left the service, under honorable conditions, prior to retirement. Help bring a member in the Order, now!

From 1964 to 1991, Mr. Chealander served in the U.S. Air Force, with tours of duty in Vietnam and Spain. An F-4 pilot and instructor pilot, and then a USAF Aggressor Pilot, Mr. Chealander was selected in 1981 to be a member of the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds. He flew with the team until 1985, when he was assigned as a staff officer at Tactical Air Command Headquarters at Langley AFB, VA.

In 1986, Mr. Chealander was selected as Military Aide to President Ronald Reagan. In this capacity, he performed a variety of ceremonial and emergency preparedness duties, including custody of the President’s emergency briefcase, “the football.”

Robert W. Arnhym Bob, thank you for sharing what you could about your days as an operative for the DOD. It explains how for so many years you were able to operate in the pageant system undetected. It was fascinating to hear about your colorful encounters as well as all the Chiefs of Staff you have happened by in your career. We really appreciate you sharing with our group. Thank you!

How did I get here? Flight Captain? I have done a lot of crazy things in my life but this one takes the cake. When I came to my first meeting, which was Founder’s Day 2008, I remember going home thinking that a group of people so grounded in what actually matters in this world did not exist...but you do. I realized that Flight 7 is a group of folks that give of themselves to perpetuate the legacy of scholarship and excellence and value at every meeting the true foundation of the sacrifice that made this country great. It was a group that I could not join fast enough. I had been a Daedalian for 11 years and never knew the heart and soul of the organization but you all have made it real. You all have made it matter. Thank you. As your new flight captain, I will serve you to the best of my ability. I am in awe of the breadth of experience in our midst and I hope to one day add to that greatness through my service to our country and this flight. Founder’s Day is a great time to share these revelations with the folks like me that just don’t know. Don’t know what an amazing fraternity this is, full of rich history and remarkable airmen. Invite others to meet our group on it’s finest day. If they cannot come in March, bring them to a subsequent meeting! Your spouses, family and friends are always welcome. Can’t wait to see you all on March 23, 2013!! Volamus

I vividly remember CAPT Matt Portz and Maj Keith Smith so graciously hosting me at a 7th Flight  gathering the summer of 1992 and it is my fondest hope that the Cadets and Midshipmen receiving a 7th Flight Scholarship in the future have a similarly rewarding MILITARY aviation career spanning multiple decades.  To date, my intentions to attend the scholarship award luncheons have never been realized.  Please drop me an e-mail as soon as you know when the 2013 event will take place, so I have the best chance of preserving that date on my calendar.  This is my work e-mail and my personal e-mail is cc'd.

I dropped a check for $100 in the mail to you earlier this week. Hopefully you have it by now.  That check is my 2013 contribution to the 7th Flight Scholarship Fund, which I have sporadically supported with donations over the years.   This year, 2013, marks the 20th year anniversary of my commissioning from AFROTC Det 060 at the University of Southern California 7 May 1993. I began my career at Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT), a highly competitive UPT assignment, that I assess I became competitive for due to my Private Pilot License and 100+ hours of flight time, both of which I was able to accomplish primarily due to the extreme generosity of 7th Flight and matching National Daedalian Scholarships I received in 1992.  My tour at ENJJPT launched an Air Force career that has, so far, included 1700+ hours in an F-16, combat time over Iraq, USAF Test Pilot School and Squadron Command... and I'm not ready to retire yet.

Col John Madison (1922-2013) of Palos Verdes Estates took his last flight on January 16, 2013. The Last services were Flight.... private.
