M arcus Baker, Chugach M ountains. In August, K ate Allen, John W ittm ayer, Randall Jones and I spent twelve days relaying equipm ent up to the headwall of the M atanuska G lacier to our Base Camp. D uring this tim e we made two superb first ascents. F rom the base of the M atanuska tributary feeding from the great ice wall on the southeast shoulder of M ount Sergeant Robinson a solo climber ascended the m ountain-sheep pastures to the east ridge of P 8380 and followed this ridge above the glacier. Traversing the snow subsummit, he climbed the glacial east face of the 600-foot sum m it pyram id. On the east side of the M atanuska G lacier, a few miles below the m ain headwall, stands a group of four sublime alpine spires. The fine 9000-foot northernm ost horn was climbed by two of the party by the north arm of its cascading glacier above the steep icefall and over the firn shoulders to and up the west ridge. F rom Base Cam p we w orked our way up the northeast ridge of M arcus Baker, two members reaching the sum m it at dusk on the sixth day. The re m ainder of the party joined them on top the following day. D e n n i s S c h m i t t , Unaffiliated
