MHS exPRESS Marlow dominates at regionals By Kendra Cooper MHS exPRESS writer
Outscoring the second place team by 96 points, the Marlow Outlaw Speech Team (MOST) returned from Bethany as regional champs. Out of 64 entries competing at regionals, 45 became finalists and 33 of the entries qualified for state. “We average around 25 qualifications each year, so our numbers are definitely up,” speech coach Paula McConnell said. Out of the 33 qualifiers, 11 were first placers, eight won second, nine finished third, seven took fourth and one member received a fifth place. “It feels good to be a regional champ my senior year; hopefully, I can do the same at state,” senior Ryan Childress said. McConnell said she is proud of the outcome of regionals and the veteran members of the team in particular. “Our senior leadership has been incredible this year, and our younger kids have shown such drive and dedication, I can’t help but be pleased,” McConnell said. The Outlaws swept the competition in six of the events. Marlow swept Dramatic Duet with 1st place Johan-

Library Club returns to grade school Members of the Marlow Outlaw Library Club finished off the year with one last visit to the elementary school. Emma Dean, Bre Vang, Rachel Folmar and Susan Nalley were the lead readers. “I love reading to the kids. They are always excited to hear the story,” senior Emma Dean said. “They brighten my day.” The entire group also read two inspirational poems to each class. “I love poetry, seeing the enthusiasm the kids have is very rewarding,” senior Bre Vang said. The library club has been reading to children since Cathy Hazel became adviser.
Cook is avid reader By Emma Dean
MHS exPRESS writer When she’s not cheering on the sidelines, this week’s Lion’s Club Student of the Week, Courtney Cook, can be found with her nose in a book. “When it comes to reading, I’m really kind of a nerd,” Cook said. However, before this year Cook said she hated reading. She said that this year she found better books in the higher lexile range. Her favorite genre is mystery, but her favorite book is nothing of the sort; Telling Christina Goodbye by Lurlene McDaniel is a love story. “It was one of the first books that really caught my attention,” Cook said. Cook’s love of reading has not only been entertaining but has also benefited her in school. “She is always early to

take her book test,” senior English teacher Sharon Bullard said. “We joke with her about it, but it really is refreshing to have someone develop a love of reading. It will benefit her in all of her future classes.” In school, Cook is a three-year member of the Marlow High School cheerleaders and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. Throughout high school, both have played a major role in her life.
“They have taught me not only how to lead, but how to help others to be leaders,” Cook said. Cook said she feels classes she has taken at MHS have helped prepare her for college. She plans on pursuing a career in the medical field as either a radiologist or registered nurse. Cook said she sees both careers as ways to serve others. “There are so many people in the world that need assistance, and if I can make a difference by doing something I love, I can’t think of anything greater,” Cook said. To achieve this goal, Cook plans on attending Cameron University in the fall to get her basics. Courtney is the daughter of Beverly and the late Charles Cook. She is the sister of 2007 Marlow alumni Cody Cook.

Second place finishes went to sophomore Calisha Hufngel in the 100 meter dash, O’Dell in the 400 meter run, Peters in pole vault and junior Kim Sheehan in discus. The small roster has gotten even smaller due to an injury. Sophomore distance runner, Maci Rich, is out all season with a stress fracture in her foot. “We plan to continue succeeding at meets; however, injuries will make it little tougher than first expected. We will continue to get better and aim

Foreign Extemporaneous resulted in a three-way tie between 1st place Erica Robinson and two other competitors. McConnell said she hopes the regional win is a sign of better things to come. “We had a spectacular showing at regionals this year,” McConnell said. “We’ve always said that our state outcome is largely determined by our regionals. Let’s hope so this year!” On April 15th and 16th the MOST will travel to Norman to compete at state.
Runners set goals as season begins MHS exPRESS writer Although the Marlow girls track team has a small roster, they have their goals set high as they compete this year. “We will have a small team, but our goals for the season are to qualify as many girls as we can for state,” girls track coach Julie Turner said. Turner also added that she hopes the girls will improve their personal records and said they have been working really hard at practice and have good attitudes. Junior Erin Crosby agreed with the assessment. “We have been working extremely hard at practice. We all hope to get better and have fun this season. Hopefully, we will be very successful,” Crosby said. Marlow opened the season with a March 11th meet in Duncan with only seven girls competing. Senior Courtney Peck won first in pole vault with a 9’6” jump, sophomore Ashley O’Dell won third in high jump and fourth in the 400 meter dash and freshman Hannah Peters won second place in pole vault with a 7’6½ ” jump. Boys also set goals With goals aimed high for the state tournament, the Marlow Outlaw boys track team plans to work hard and get better. “This is my first year on the high school team, but we seem to have a large team. Our main goal is the state tournament, and that is what we work hard for every day,” sophomore Jor-
dan VanBuskirk said. According to head coach, Bobby Wortham, the team’s strong events are the relays. At the Duncan meet, the one-mile relay team placed eighth with a team consisting of seniors Kody Harvey and Travis Verdin and juniors Cody Crowe and Cole Smiley. In the two-mile relay the team placed eighth with team members consisting of senior Chisholm Holland, junior Crowe and sophomores Tony Aguilera and VanBuskirk. Also, Smiley placed seventh in the 110 meter hurdles. At the Marlow meet, Verdin placed first in the 200 meter dash and third in the long jump, junior Cody Bray placed second in pole vault, Crowe placed third in the 800 meter run, Aguilera placed second in the 1600 meter run, freshman Chris Davis placed fourth in the 3200 meter run and the Outlaws placed third in the 400 meter relay, 1600 meter relay and the 3200 meter relay. “I am proud of our team and our success in the past two meets,” Holland said. “I hope we continue to get better and improve individually and as a team.”
