Playing Time Players should be playing close to at least 50% of each game Things that could impact game time – Attendance at practice & injury Positional play • U13+ begin to formalize positions • U9-‐U12 o Develop soccer players o Pick a role for the player to play that game, next game new role, and so on o Best players may be able to handle being moved around during the game but it can be confusing o Everyone plays GK -‐ can be reduced if you have a group of 6 to 8 that really want to play
Game Day Observation/Notes Everyone is going to know the score no matter what age but it is what you do with it that matters • How we play depending on the score is more critical for the Fall then who play – Game situations o Are we winning, losing, what it the weather, is there a lot of time left, not much time left, etc.? Most importantly – How is the game going compared to what we have trained? • Overall • Specific players
Parent’s Help Get them on your side Send a note before game day to highlight what you need them to cheer Can you get a parent to welcome the other team and point out where the bathrooms are where the visitors usually sit, where the concession stand is, etc. You might want to consider purchasing a copy of the “The Car Ride Home” you can find it at http://thecarridehome.com/ Provide them with some possible conversations with their child: • Pre Game o Have fun and play hard – maximum effort 2630 Ojibway Drive, Woodbury , MN 55125 w

o What do you need from me? o Focus children on things they control During the game o You could explain what not to say but it may not be accepted well so instead provide them with what they can and should cheer for o Provide them specific soccer related items (you might need to show them these things) o You can do it! Way to go! You got it! No problem! Post Game o Congratulate child on their effort if it was good o Respect silence if that is what your child wants o Reinforce good examples of hard work, sportsmanship, commitment, etc. o Ask open ended questions § What did you learn? How did you feel you played? What was the nest thing you did? What could you have done differently?
