Lesson Plan Form Name of Activity:

Build a Tower

Materials needed:

Game Board, game counters, die, Duplo/Lego blocks

Extension into classroom centers:

Dramatic play: Add to Block area, add vehicles, people to completed tower Math: Measuring implements to determine height Science: Try different designs and bases for stability Art: Have children draw the completed tower Library: Add books on building and construction.

Procedure:

Vocabulary:

Have each child choose a game counter. Roll die and move along the path. Read the instruction on the square landed on, take or lose building/Duplo pieces and place the pieces in the area on the playing board designated for building. As the players move around the board the tower will change as pieces are added and subtracted. When all the players have completed the path, the game is over and the tower is complete. Additional Notes:

This is a very collaborative game as the children work together to build and make changes in their tower as the game progresses. Taking turns and problem solving are as important to the success of the game as are recognizing the dots on the die, counting spaces, and construction of the tower.
