CLOSED SYLLABLES A syllable is a word or a part of a word that always has a vowel. A closed syllable always has a short vowel and is surrounded by one or more consonants.

Here are some examples of closed syllables:

Note that the consonant always follows the short vowel. It is like a gate, closing in the vowel.

Syllable Division Rule #1 (VC/CV) When two or more consonants stand between two vowels, divide between the consonants. vowel-consonant / consonant-vowel (VC / CV)
