May 2011

From the hog desk Well, all you Hogs and Hogettes, it’s that time of the year to check your rain gear for holes or tears. There is nothing like getting wet and then the temperatures dip. (Right all you Hannibal riders?) Remember, if you are traveling through the mountains that same rain gear will keep you warm. We have a new patch ride program (see below) you will want to take part in. Our very own “SCOOP” Pork Chop goes to the Rally. Arzola, along with Brice “DESIGNER” Obermuller have put together an OFFICIAL Ice Cream challenge. If you make a minimum of four (4) ice cream rides during the year ending in December, you will receive the patch. Each year after, you will receive a small bar with the year to sew under the patch. Now, these rides must be promoted as an OFFICIAL ride and cannot be in conjunction with any other ride. I know you will want to jump aboard the ice cream truck. Have you started getting those dealership stamps for the Passport program? There are still a few more passports ($3 ea) in the H.O.G. office, so stop in and pick yours up today. You can always review the rules on this and other programs by visiting the website under H.O.G. ROOM HEARTLAND. PaPa Smurff

On April 30-May 1, Bob Jones led a group of 22 bikes and 28 people on the first overnight trip of the year to Hannibal, MO. Bob’s scenic route led us down many a winding twolane highway through small country towns and acres of green farmland. On the way to Hannibal, we stopped in Waverly, Sumner and Marceline where we were able to snap some photos for the I’ve Been Everyone Nationwide Program with the various and very creative “G’s” used for the photos. The ride quickly was nicknamed, “Bob’s G-Spot ride to Hannibal”. The weather on Saturday, although overcast, was perfect for riding. Upon arrival in Hannibal, we toured the Mark Twain Cave and saw a one man show recounting Mark Twain’s life. Then we headed back to the hotel for dinner, swimming and socializing. The return trip on Sunday started out promising with sunshine, but turned out to be short-lived. After about an hour on the road the temps dropped to the low 40s and as we stopped in Columbia and Jeffer-

son City for more G-spot photos, we found some rain. As expected, a little wet stuff and cold didn’t stop a determined group of HOGS. We persevered making our way home as best we could under the less than perfect conditions. Overall however, the trip was enjoyed by all and a great start to the 2011 riding season and overnight trips.

Mileage program Did you know there are two (2) mileage programs available to all American Heartland H.O.G. members? One is from the national chapter where you enroll your CURRENT mileage and different levels after that. To find out more on this National program stop by the H.O.G. office and ask how to get in on this ride. The other program is offered from the local chapter, of which you must also be a member. This is a yearly program from May to May each year. Your record of mileage is kept on the back side of your Local membership card and can only be signed by one of the officers. The rules are listed on the website. With proof of your mileage from May 2010 until now (maybe a service invoice from Gail’s showing your mileage), you can still qualify for either the minimum of 5,000 or 10,000 miles for the year. If you have not made the minimum 5,000 miles sign up NOW for next year.

Safety corner If you pride and joy is equipped with a Harley-Davidson security system, how long has it been since you changed the battery in the fob? Some of us make it a practice to change it every year or two. Not being able to start your bike while on a trip can be embarrassing when you discover it’s a dead bat-

tery problem. You can always ask to borrow a friend’s battery in order to get you on your way. THEN, head to the nearest store for a replacement. Did you know that any HarleyDavidson barrel key will open your gas tank?

There’s still room at the inn Sturgis in June, June 25 – July 3, 2011, to be exact. Each year thousands of bikes gather in and around Sturgis SD. What started 71 years ago to be one week has turned into three, the weeks before, during and after. There are a lot of great places to ride: Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, Deadwood, Needles Hwy and Custer Park. And, you will be able to enjoy them all at your own pace. Yes, riding up in June you may miss some of the crowd, but maybe the hoop-la isn’t the way you roll. You will also find prices are not so escalated. We will stay in Mitchell, Wall, Rapid City, Deadwood, Sturgis and Sioux Falls. With the exception of the ride up and the 400 miles to Mitchell, the other days will be around 250 each. Email: [email protected] if you are interested in joining the ‘Heartland Express’.

It is with regret… Our deepest sympathy and condolences goes out to the Rook family during their loss. Leon was well thought of and respected by Gail, her staff, and the members of American Heartland H.O.G. (Photo taken by John R.O.A.R.)
