The Order of Daedalians, the National Fraternity of Military Pilots, was organized on 26 March 1934 by a group of World War I commissioned Army pilots to perpetuate the spirit of patriotism, love of country and ideals of self-sacrifice which place service to nation above personal safety or position. Membership is open to pilots (commissioned, warrant officers, USAAF flight officers, and WASPs) of all US armed services and who can be on active duty, retired or have left the service, under honorable conditions, prior to retirement. Help bring a member in the Order, now!

Jonna Doolittle Hoppes

Jonna Doolittle Hoppes. Thank you for joining us on the 75th anniversary of your grandfather’s historic demonstration of American courage and ingenuity in leading 80 of>icers and men in an iconic retaliatory B-25 raid on Japan early in WWII. Your descriptions of your interactions with your grandparents, their beliefs and convictions, were especially moving. We thank you for joining us at our Founders Day luncheon meeting and especially for your dedication in keeping the General Jimmy Doolittle spirit of Nation Before Self alive and vibrant.

Founders Day 2017 was a great gathering of Daedalian members and their guests at the Ports O’Call restaurant in San Pedro. Each year we have the opportunity to remember and celebrate the >light’s legacy and achievements since the >light’s founding in 1956. We were indeed fortunate this year in having a founder’s granddaughter, Jonna Doolittle Hoppes as our speaker. Jonna, an accomplished speaker and author shared insights of her grandfather’s distinguished Air Force career, including the historic Doolittle Raid on Japan 75 years ago. The raid played a major role in developing America’s perception of airpower as demonstrated in both the European and Paci>ic theaters of WWII. But, it will also be remembered for the courage and daring of the crew members that demonstrated a key tenet of we Daedalians-Nation before self. Our Century Club sponsored scholarship selection of>icers have recently completed their interviews of scholarship applicants and have nominated 7 applicants for scholarship grants. The grants consisting of both Century Club and matching Daedalian National scholarship funds will be provided to the selected applicant ROTC cadets during this semester year, but the recipients will be invited back to share their aspirations and plans as military pilots at our September luncheon meeting. Members are encouraged to plan now to attend this meeting as these ROTC cadets are well focused and their aspirations, zeal, accomplishments and plans for military careers are impressive. The results of our earlier inquiry as to member interest in a visit to the March Field Air Museum are in and 11 May is the preferred visit date. A number of members indicated a preference to travel by coach and others plan to self-drive. Those preferring to ride by coach will leave from LAAFB at 0830 with an estimated time in route of 2+30. Our return to LAAFB is planned to be by approximately 1700 hours. Should others like to join the group, please notify the Skipper ([email protected]). Our May luncheon speaker is Ronald Warner a former Army helicopter pilot and subsequently a Delta Airlines >light simulator instructor. More on Ron and his aviation career in an accompanying biographical sketch contained separately, herein. Lastly, please continue to contribute to our Century Club; an exceptional method of sponsoring inspired ROTC cadets seeking military careers as pilots. We will be recognizing our Century Club Ruby members at our May 18th meeting. Ruby Century Club members are those that have contributed $500 or more to our Century Club. An easy method of contributing is by including your contribution on the accompanying luncheon reservation form. VV Art
