MECH 210 Fall 2009 Midterm 1 (Closed book, Calculators allowed, 50 min. 2 problems, 20 points) For all problems assume no friction and neglect gravity unless a mass is specified.
Problem 1 (10 points) For each case a), b), c) and d): • Draw the appropriate free body diagram • List the unknowns and the number of equations available Do not write or solve any equations a) Here we want to determine the loads on the wrench
b) Here we want to determine the reactions at point A. 10 N
c) Bar AB has a mass M and hangs from a ceiling. We want the reactions at points A and B.
d) This 50 kg ring hangs from a ceiling. We want to determine the tension in the 3 cables.
Problem 2 (10 points) Member ABC lies on a horizontal plane, and is attached to vertical pole DE and to cable CD. The collar at A is free to slide along the pole, but a groove on the pole prevents rotation. A 18 lb force is applied as shown (neglect gravity). a) Calculate the tension in the cable and the support reactions at A b) Calculate the support reactions at E
