SUN DEVIL REWIND
1-5-2 2017-18 LEADERS
It was a tale of two nights during the Sun Devils’ trip to upstate New York, as a turnover-heavy Friday night was followed up by one of the better games ASU has played so far this season. Despite game 2 not ending with their second ‘W’ of the season, the Sun Devils were led by a tremendous 47-save performance by sophomore goaltender JOEY DACCORD. The lone goal occurred on a fluke ping-pong bounce in front of the net completely out of his control. While the scoresheet shows a lopsided game -- with ASU being outshot 48-22 -- the Sun Devils controlled a majority of the match-up. Colgate bought in to blocking shots -- they rank 2nd in the NCAA in blocked shots -- cutting a majority of the SOG by the Devils that didn’t see daylight. On special teams, while the power-play finished 0-for-8 on the weekend, the penalty kill allowed just one goal on nine Raider opportunities. Lines continued to shake-up in week four, as head coach Greg Powers continues to evaluate chemistry among his young roster.

The long-awaited series between the only two programs along the Sun Belt is finally here. The Sun Devils were originally scheduled to travel to Alabama Huntsville this season to start the home-and-home series, but there was a late swap prior to the season, thus taking ASU to UAH next season. Back in 1987, the governor of Alabama designed Huntsville to be the “Hockey Capital of the South”. The Sun Devils and Tempe maybe have something to say about that. Similar to ASU, Huntsville started as a club program and ended up winning three club national championships before making the jump to NCAA status in 1985-86 as a Division II program. In 1987-88, they moved to Division I before eventually moving back to Division II in 1992. The program captured UAH’s first national championship in 1996 and second in 1998. In 1998-99, they transitioned back to Division I. This season, the Chargers have yet to play a home game with now four-straight weeks on the road. Their lone victory on the season came at Michigan Tech on Oct. 21 (4-2). UAH’s start to the season hasn’t been forgiving, as they started at No. 8 Notre Dame, followed by No. 15 Michigan Tech, and most recently current No. 18 Cornell. Between the pipes, Huntsville also features a former Muskegon Lumberjack in senior Jordan Uhelski. In four seasons, he holds a 7-13-3 record with a 2.98 goals against average and .903 save percentage. This season, he’s 1-4-0 with a 3.82 GAA and .890 save percentage. They’re offense is led by junoir forward Tyler Poulsen (3-2-5) and senior Josh Kestner (3-2-5).

• Junior ANTHONY CROSTON was the only player to reach double-digit goals in 2016-17, and he returns with his linemates and fellow double-digit pointers LOUIE ROWE and DYLAN HOLLMAN. The trio also returns as the three leaders in 2017-18, with HOLLMAN serving as the captain for the second-straight season and officially longest tenured captain in ASU hockey history. CROSTON and ROWE will wear the A’s. • CROSTON, ROWE, HOLLMAN and sophomore TYLER BUSCH are the only players who are back with 10-plus assists a season ago, with HOLLMAN leading the pack with 12. • BUSCH is the next highest returning goal scorer, as the 6-foot-3 centerman returns as the top-line center this weekend after netting nine goals and 11 assists as a rookie. BUSCH got off to a hot start last season, netting a goal in each of his first four games in the NCAA.

with Alabama Huntsville d-man John Teets and forwards Hans Gorowsky and Adam Wilcox as members of the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in 2014-15. • For three-straight years, Sun Devil forwards TYLER BUSCH and RILEY SIMPSON were teammates with Charger defenseman Connor James with the Spruce Grove Saints in the AJHL. Back in 2013-14, ASU captain DYLAN HOLLMAN was also part of that squad. • In 2015-16, the formerly-known Aston Rebels featured ASU’s DOM GARCIA, GVIDO JANSONS and UAH d-man Connor Wood.
RETURN TO THE FOLD
• Eight of the 10 Sun Devils who recorded double-digit points in 2016-17 return this season, with the only
departures being Robbie Baillargeon and Wade Murphy.
• Tonight’s match-up between ASU’s JOEY DACCORD and Alabama Huntsville’s Jordan Uhelski becomes a battle of the former Muskegon Lumberjacks. • In 2015-16, DACCORD played in 48 games with a 3.10 goals against average, .904 save percentage and a 2120-5 record with two shutouts. • From 2012-14, Uhelski put together a 17-13-8 record with a 2.66 goals against average in 2012-13 and a 3.70 average in 2013-14. His first season in Muskegon featured a 7-5-4 record with a .909 save percentage as the No. 2 goaltender. In 2013-14, he split time between the pipes with a 10-8-4 record and .890 save percentage.
RISE OF THE ROOKIES
• The 2017 incoming Sun Devil class ranked No. 9 in the country according to NeutralZone.net. • The ranking is fitting, as ASU welcomes nine new freshmen, including JOHNNY WALKER, JACOB
WILSON, GVIDO JANSONS, FILIPS BUNCIS, DOMINIC GARCIA, AUSTIN LEMIEUX, GAGE MACKIE, MAX BALINSON and MIKE DePHILLIPS. • WILSON and JANSONS are listed as top-25 recruits among 1997-born players, according to Neutral Zone. WALKER comes in at No. 45 in the field of 1996-born players, with GARCIA at No. 48. • LEMIEUX, who is the son of Hockey Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Penguins’ owner Mario Lemieux, will redshirt the 2017-18 season.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP
• While the freshman class arrives in style, the rising freshmen that are now sophomores continue
to thrive in their second season. Four of the top-10 scorers from a season ago were all returning sophomores, including BUSCH, JAKOB STRIDSBERG, BRINSON PASICHNUK and BRETT GRUBER. • Those four again are atop the leaderboard as four of the top-eight scorers this season. • Goaltender JOEY DACCORD also finished strong, going 1-1-1 in his final three starts against No. 17
Quinnipiac and No. 9 Western Michigan. The tie came in an overtime victory, which is considered at tie, against the Broncos. Over the course of those three games, he made 138 saves. • So far, defensemen BRINSON PASICHNUK and JAKOB STRIDSBERG continue to thrive from the blue line with four goals and four assists between the two.
CAPTAIN’S LINE
• The captain’s line of HOLLMAN (C), CROSTON (A) and ROWE (A) reunites after totaling 17 goals and 26 assists in 17 games as a line from late November through the end of the season. • After starting the season on a hot streak with four goals and 10 assists together, the three have only compiled one assist over the last five games since game two against Air Force. • The trio make up three of the four players in the plus, with HOLLMAN at +4, and ROWE and CROSTON at +3. • The three have been averaging over 20 minutes a night, with CROSTON pacing the line at 22+ minutes.

LATVIAN LOVE
• The Sun Devils welcome their second and third Europeans to the roster, as Latvian
defenseman GVIDO JANSONS and forward FILIPS BUNCIS come to Tempe and join Swedish sophomore JAKOB STRIDSBERG. • Along with their hard-and-heavy style of play, the two both stand at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds and arrive at ASU from the NAHL. BUNCIS played with the Johnstown Tomahawks, where he wore the ‘C’ as the first European captain in Johnstown history. He netted 11 goals and 25 assists last season. • JANSONS spent last season with fellow freshman DOMINIC GARCIA with the Aston Rebels, where he led all NAHL defensemen in goals scored with 19 -- 11 of them on the power-play.
THE GEASERS
• Redshirt senior DAVID NORRIS and graduate transfer GAGE HOUGH reside as the
only two seniors on this year’s Sun Devil roster. • NORRIS is the final Sun Devil who once played for the ACHA program before it transitioned into NCAA Division I. • At the end of 2014, NORRIS transferred from American International College in the
NCAA for a change of scenery and to join his brother, LIAM, on the Devils’ roster. Never knowing whether he would play NCAA hockey, NORRIS scored nine goals and nine assists in nine games in that final season of ACHA -- the same time when ASU found out they would move to the NCAA. • Due to NCAA rules, NORRIS redshirted the inaugural NCAA season at ASU and returned last year for his first year back in college hockey. He scored three goals and nine assists before suffering an injury in the second game against Denver on Jan. 7. • HOUGH once played with current assistant captain LOUIE ROWE before going to UMass-Lowell for his first three seasons, totaling six goals and four assists in 40 games. He is currently pursuing his master’s in Sports Law & Business.
DRAFTED DEVIL
• Sophomore JOEY DACCORD is now the only Sun Devil to have been drafted in the
NHL after the departure of Robbie Baillargeon and Wade Murphy. • DACCORD was drafted prior to wearing the Maroon & Gold, but is officially the
first drafted player in Sun Devil Division I history as he was commited to ASU. DACCORD went 199th overall in the 7th round of the 2015 NHL Draft to the Ottawa Senators. • Over the summer, sophomores BRINSON PASICHNUK, TYLER BUSCH and JAKOB STRIDSBERG attended NHL Development Camps, including the Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs, respectively.
