Medium term plan
Year 2
Title: Home Sweet Home Lead subjects: Geography, Art, PSHE, Science Learning values: Independence, Creativity Brilliant beginning: Tour of the school, taking pictures of features of the school, and preparing a short talk about their house (for home learning). Making shadow pictures of the front of the school by sketching and using black paper to visualise shapes and perspective. Fantastic finale and outcome: Sightseeing trip to Bournemouth visiting ‘open to all’ attractions including gardens and beach and lunch and visit to Russell Cotes museum. Children find out about important buildings (old and new) and how the town has grown. Other activities: Who lives in my home; family tree, pets etc Looking at different homes in the UK and around the world eg; igloos, yurt etc Place famous buildings on maps (and learning the continents) Use globes, maps and plans Finding out about my home (and the people who live in it) and
Key objectives: Geography The children find out about their homes and house types. They look at key features of buildings and survey the school in detail including through art and design. They make a simple map of the school grounds and church. Children learn about the continents and oceans, placing these on a map, and look at the types of buildings found in other parts of the worls (including ‘famous’ landmarks). They then look at important buildings in Bournemouth and look at how and why Bournemouth has grown into a large town. NC REFS: ‘name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans’ ‘understand geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom’ ‘key physical features, including: beach, cliff, coast’ ‘key human features, including: city, town, village, factory, farm, house, office, port, harbour and shop’ ‘use world maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries, as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at this key stage’ ‘use simple compass directions (North, South, East and West) and locational and directional language [for example, near and far; left and right], to describe the location of features and routes on a map’ ‘use aerial photographs and plan perspectives to recognise landmarks and basic human and physical features; devise a simple map; and use and construct basic symbols in a key’ ‘use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment.’ 01 October 2015
Art and Design Children sketch and label pictures of their homes. They identify and draw ‘old/new’ features of the school. They create a sillohette picture of the front of the school. NC REFS: ‘to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space’
Science Living Things and Habitats This topic straddles both Autumn half terms Children classify into a table whether various things are living, once living and never lived. They begin to consider how humans use these materials for our own purposes. They consider the concept of an animal and what animals need to survive. They create simple food chains. They investigate where plants and animals live on a local and global level. They make model habitats in Design and Technology. They begin to think about how animals have adapted to their environments, studying polar bears and camels.
NC REFS Working Scientifically ‘identifying and classifying’ ‘using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions’
Content ‘explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive’ ‘identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other’ ‘identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats’ ‘describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.’
History Children consider how and why Bournemouth grew as a town. They learn about the Talbot Sisters and how their legacy has and continues to positively affect the life of the local area. They learn about local historical figures such as Lewis Tregonwell and local smugglers. 01 October 2015
NC REFS: ‘significant historical events, people and places in their own locality’ ‘changes within living memory. Where appropriate, these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national life’
Design and Technology Children make dioramas to complement their work in science. They work in small groups to design, make and evaluate their final product. NC REFS: ‘generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate, information and communication technology’ ‘select from and use a wide range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their characteristics’ ‘evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria’ ‘build structures, exploring how they can be made stronger, stiffer and more stable’
ICT Children to demonstrate logging onto the system. Children will learn about using the computer safely and what programmes we will be using. Children will learn to use Microsoft word and how to type and edit written texts. They will learn about forms of electronic communication; emails, forums etc. They will learn how to use the internet safely and demonstrate how to find and access a website. NC REFS: ‘use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.’ ‘recognise common uses of information technology beyond school’ ‘use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content’
