LOWER SCHOOL NEWS Week of October 17, 2011 Lower School Headlines by Dr. Graham I can’t believe that it is already Fall Break! It seems that the first 9 weeks has flown by amid the various activities and events. I would just like to thank all of you for the great start to the school year. The children have done such a fantastic job, and we can’t thank all of you enough for the tremendous support received. We would like to wish all of you a fantastic Fall Break. The weather has been beautiful, and we hope that the sunshine remains throughout our break. Please be careful if you are traveling, and we look forward to seeing you back at school next Tuesday. Girl Scout Camp Reminder This is a reminder for all girls from grades 1-4th that Girl Scout troop 2065 is doing a camping workshop. It is going to be held at Edwin Warner Park. The younger girl's group, 1st and 2nd graders, day will be on November 13th from 1-5 pm. The older girl's group, 3rd and 4th graders, day will be on November 5th from 11 am to 4 pm. This is free to all girls wanting to participate. This day will help them improve their camping skills for future trips. It is not too late to sign up. BGA Lower School Garden Club The Lower School Garden Club will be accepting bulb donations (specifically blue or yellow bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, or hyacinths). These bulbs will be planted around the Lower School campus. If you wish to donate, please send a bag of bulbs with your child any time between September 26th – October 21st. There will be a donation box in the cafeteria. On October 22nd from 9 a.m. – 12 noon, everyone is welcome to join the Garden Club for a fun planting day. They will be planting crab apple trees, bulbs, and fall blooming flowers. There will be some crafts for the children, as well. If you have any questions, please email Tina Jones at

This is a non-denominational prayer and weekly devotional time for students in grades Kg-4. Students who wish to participate need to arrive to school by 7:30 and wait in the cafeteria for an announcement to be made. Lower School K-4 News: October 17-21, 2011 Kindergarten Korner Unit Study: Halloween/Pumpkins Activities this week include: creating a five little pumpkins TLC, sequencing the life cycle of a pumpkin, identifying a color coded pumpkin, matching pumpkin faces, arranging a pumpkin number sequence, sorting “D” items, and using “D” letter cards in sentences. High Frequency Words (HFW) for the week: do, you, little Letter Recognition and Sounds- The letter “Dd”. Handwriting- The focus will be on the letter “Dd.” Math-The focus will be on number games and pairing sets. Science-The focus will be on observing seeds and also preparing seeds for germination.
Spanish: Students will learn Halloween Vocabulary. Creative Writing: Writers have sentence skills. Books- The Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything, Five Little Pumpkins, Even Monsters Need Haircuts, and Six Creepy Sheep.
First Grade Language Arts: We are excited for our first graders to read and perform their first reader’s theater, “The Spider and the Fly.” We will use this as an opportunity to work on fluency and expression. Students will identify the characters, setting and plot as well as review parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective). Vocabulary: pretty, prettiest, little, curious, weary, winding, spider Spelling: begin, dry, fly, going, pie, she, untie, do, don’t, spider. Math: This week, we will review fact families to see how addition and subtraction facts are related. We will also implement problem solving strategies. Spanish: Students will be reviewing color and shape vocabulary. Unit Study: In conjunction with our reader’s theater, we will take a look into the wonderful world of spiders. Students will identify characteristics of a spider to contrast arachnids and insects. Website of the Week: familyfun.com This Disney-sponsored site includes a variety of do-it-yourself activities, crafts, games and more. Explore and enjoy some true family fun! Additional Information: We will visit Walden Farm on Thursday, Oct. 20. If you have signed up to attend with us, you are welcome to follow the bus which will leave promptly at 10am from the Lower School parking lot or may meet us at the farm for our tour beginning at 10:30. We will eat lunch while there. Students on the meal plan will have a boxed lunch provided. All other students should bring a lunch including a drink and that does not require being reheated. Students should wear a yellow BGA polo and comfortable shoes.
Second Grade Language Arts: We are beginning our novel study of Junie B., First Grader Boo … and I Mean It! by Barbara Park. We will concentrate on comprehension skills and vocabulary. Our spelling lesson is lesson 9 and focuses on words with th and wh. Math: The students will continue learning to regroup in hundreds, tens, and ones. Subtracting across zeros will be introduced. Science: We will begin the unit about rocks, soil, and fossils. Spanish: Students will be learning about the difference between tu and usted. Special Note: Second grade will be going on a field trip to Lucky Ladd Farms on Monday, October 24. Please have your child wear jeans, yellow polo, and tennis shoes. Information will be sent home in the Tuesday folder.
Third Grade Language Arts: Students will continue reading stories in the basal reader. The focus skill will be sequencing of events. They will begin Unit 2 in the English book, studying nouns.
Handwriting: Students will continue practicing upper case cursive letters using the Zaner Bloser workbook. Spelling: Lesson 9 test will be given on Friday. Math: The students will begin solving addition and subtraction word problems using bar models. Please continue to practice addition facts at home. We will be starting multiplication soon! Science: The students will complete an information book this week on all nine planets. They will then move into learning about stars and constellations. Spanish: Students will learn days of the week and months in Spanish. Third Grade Notes: Welcome back! We hope you had a relaxing Fall Break.
Fourth Grade Language Arts: This week we will begin experimenting with the online portion of Write Source. This will be an in class activity until further notice. While looking at this, we will begin discussing our story writing unit. The students will begin brainstorming and mapping for their little buddy stories. We are continuing our reading with The Cay and having in class discussions with what we read. In grammar, we are moving on to quotations. We will spend all week working on this new skill. This will be a full week after a restful break. Math: Next week, we will begin our study on division, starting with lesson 3.4. We will discover how multiplication relates to division and model division with and without regrouping. Please remember to practice multiplication facts at home each week. Social Studies: As the landforms of the NE are studied, the students are relating how the natural resources have shaped the lifestyles of the Northeastern people. Vocabulary: The students have begun working with Lesson 4 word list, which is scheduled for testing on Oct. 27th. Spelling: Following Fall Break, the students will focus on the activities for Lesson 9 for the of week Oct. 18-21st. Spanish: Students will be learning the Spanish alphabet.
