Meeting Challenges of 2nd Nuclear Age Technology, Training and Tactics; The Pacific Case-Fighting Back Game of GO Proverbs: “If you have lost all four corners then you have lost” “If you have secured all four corners then you have lost” Ed Timperlake Editor, Second Line of Defense Forum 26 May 2015 http://www.sldinfo.com http://www.sldforum.com For further analyses see: “H. Rebuilding American Military Power in the Pacific: A 21st Century Strategy, Robbin Laird, Ed Timperlake, and Richard Weitz, (Praeger Press)
Lessons Learned from Cold War and Current Engagements: Harvest the Best Leave the Rest • No Platform Fights Alone‐Wynne Doctrine‐“If in fair fight someone failed in planning”‐all military technology is relative against a reactive enemy. • “Tron” war is an increasing important component (to be explained by examples)‐WWII “Big Blue Blanket” now “Big Blue tron and sensor shooter Blanket” • UAVs are not the future of Air Power they are Part of the Future: They needed more realistic operational proof of concept testing—UAV Vs Kinetic Killers, “tron” warriors; EW, EMP, Cyber Attacks‐they are data links in space—MUST BE HIGHEST PRIORITY with 40,000+ PLA UAV Goal • An S‐cubed Revolution is fast approaching Sensors‐Stealth‐Speed • F‐35 will dramatically change con‐ops ‐Fusin Cockpit will put increased emphasis on Pilot’s “Decide Act” in OODA loop‐especially with shared mission data. ‐Active/Passive sensing will be added to operational combat mission planning in a big way ‐Tactical Aircraft with Strategic Capabilities beyond just Block 4 “Nuke Mission” • ADA, on land and Sea is becoming a very effective military response
Training Ranges and Exercises (Red Flag) will give US and Allies probably a 10 year lead on all adversaries: USMC –YUMA F-35 is really an F/A/E- 35; In a ground attack mission the cockpit display gave the pilot a constant read out of AA and GA threats-“EW was but a button away” F-35 B with MV-22 will change USMC’s ability to execute “insertion and with drawl forces globally. USAF-Nellis Mission Data set is critical and AF knows it Just one F-35 captures “signature” of TF-50, J-20, J-31-they become 4th Gen—because entire Global Enterprise has “ mission data file” Red Flag can eventually mix and match friendlies and aggressor threats playing off F22/F-35 and Legacy aircraft, Russia and PLAAF cannot do this –they have no stealth aircraft with a 360 Fusin Cockpit. USN-Fallon Live Virtual Constructive Range at Fallon will allow the complexities of a modern battlefield to both be inclusive and wide ranging. The USS Gerald Ford will dramatically change C&C for US and Allies-17 spaces for “cyber” configuration and reconfiguration as tactical situation develops. Reach not Range-Aegis and SSG(N) working together
Deputy Chief of the Royal Australian Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Gavin (Leo) Davies, who will take over as Chief of the Air Force this summer, has highlighted the importance of the island environment for Aussie forces. “We want to have fresh looks at how (our Air Force) might operate in an island environment as vast as Australia and deliver the kind of military tasks that these crews will face and the Government expects.”
