MESSAGE from the

Coordinator

One of the most important components of a child’s growth is their character development. At St. Jude’s Academy students strive to be each IB learner profile and one way students are able to achieve this is by the many hands-on activities we provide for them. The month of February has been extremely busy with students being able to develop their learner profiles. The grade 9-11 students were thinkers and knowledgeable at the “Listen Up!” climate change and youth activism conference at the University of Toronto. The grade 7 and 8 classes were balanced when they went curling with Mr. Slyk for P.E. class. In addition, all students have also had the opportunity to go skiing three times this year. I am happy to announce that in the upcoming months, students will have multiple opportunities to attend different university campuses. -Ms. Chin

What is Happening in Our Classrooms? MESSAGE from

Mr. Palumbo– Grade 7

In Canadian history we have been examining early Aboriginals and the technology they used. As a class we are creating a 5-meter long papier-mâché model of a birch bark Ojibwa canoe. Students have worked in small groups to create the ribs, gunnels, and body out of cardboard and newspaper. Students are also investigating a number of other Aboriginal tools and technology in the form of an independent research study and report.

Mme. Villeneuve – Grade 8

The grade 8 students have spent considerable time working with verbs from various groups. They really confirmed that they know these with their test results. They are now working on submitting a project about time travel, keeping a trip itinerary journal, and reporting on a conversation/meeting with a famous character from a past epoch. I cannot wait to hear about what messages they have brought back from their journey!

Mr. Slyk – Grade 9/10

For the past two weeks the grade 9 and 10’s have been engaged in a unit on European handball. Students have been learning about proper shooting techniques, offensive footwork and tactics, as well as defensive movement skills and strategies while taking into account all of their surroundings. Students have had the opportunity to apply these skills throughout fast paced mini games, which have challenged them to develop communication and collaboration skills in order to work effectively as a team.

Ms. Sy – Grade 11

In grade 11 physics, we just accomplished a motion lab where students were able to work in a group to determine the speed of a toy car. Most students came up with the idea to construct a ramp and have the car roll down the ramp. The students recorded the time and distance the car travelled to calculate the speed. With this lab, students were able to design the lab’s components such as hypothesis, procedure, and analysis. Currently, we are covering the introduction to kinematics, learning about speed, velocity, and acceleration.
