MGTS1301 SEMESTER NOTES LECTURE ONE • Within all organisations there is the role of management • All organisations are under pressure to perform – Survival – Legitimacy • A key question = What does “good” management look like? What is “management”? ‘The attainment of organisational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, leading, organising and controlling organisational resources’ (Text: p.10) Efficiency and effectiveness Effectiveness is the degree to which the organisation achieves a stated goal (page 15) (doing what you said you would do) Efficiency is the use of minimal resources – raw materials, money and people – to produce a desired volume of output. (doing it as quickly and as ‘cheaply’ as possible) The four functions of management
(i) Planning: ‘The management function concerned with defining goals for the future organisational performance and deciding on the tasks and resource use needed to attain them’ (Samson et al ,2012, page 11) Where it wants to be - Vision statement
EG: Strategy: who are we (what business are we in?/ Why? Purpose, belief); How do we compete? (How?); How do we support the business-level strategy (What?) – Simon Sinek “How great leaders inspire action” (ii) Organising: ‘The management function concerned with assigning tasks, grouping tasks into departments, and allocating resources to departments’ (Samson et al, 2012, page 13). Assigning tasks: Who will do what? Grouping tasks into departments; What are the appropriate clusters of tasks? Deciding how the different departments are coordinated; What are the points of connection? Allocating resources: What they need to achieve this? Who makes what decisions? Allocating authority: Who gets to decide what? (iii) Leading The management function that involves the use of influence to motivate employees to achieve the organisation’s goals’ (Samson et al, 2012, page 13). Influencing & Motivating achieve organisational goals Managing employee behaviour: Ie: Direction & control through interpersonal means Effective communication: Central to both: At all levels (iv) Controlling ‘The management function concerned with monitoring employees’ activities, keeping the organisation on track towards its goals, and making corrections as needed’ (Samson et al, 2012, page 14). Monitor employee’s activities: Compare actual to planned target: Take corrective action: All aspects of the organisation’s operation: Practices…and people; Control in relation to organisation structure: Top-down, Devolved / empowerment & trust, Training, Communication ‘Managers give direction to their organisations, provide leadership and decide how to use organisational resources to accomplish goals’ (Text: p.10) Where we’re headed this semester…
